I got a finger print on a new Canon lens two days, but am cleaning it today. Is that anything to worry about? I'm getting UV filters so this doesn't happen again.

Yikes! That's really bad! How could you have touched it! Just kidding. No biggie. Just blow & wipe it.

Here come the filter vs no-filter posts:

A little bit of water vapor (breathe on the lens) and a microfiber cloth will work wonders. Unless it's really dug into the lens, then you'll have to use more advanced cleaning techniques.

You should get some kind of blower, so you can blow away dust and any sand particles you may have on the lens surface.

Then use a clean microfibre cloth. There are kits with cleaning fluid available, but the microfibre cloth will normally manage to lift the finger prints without smearing but you should try to touch the cloth as little as possible with your fingers, and always store it protected. You don't need to apply any pressure when using the microfibre cloth.

There are special lens pens available, that can help reaching the edges of the glass. But it is hard to get fingerprints near the edges since our fingers aren't so sharp. If the fingerprint is a bit close to the edge, you should be careful with the cloth and not move towards the edge, in case it doesn't catch all of the fingerprint in the first pass of the cloth.

UV filters are a good thing. The best UV filters have special coating that is extra-simple to clean. Avoid too cheap UV filters, since bad filter coating can greatly reduce the image quality because of reflections in the filter.

Use a lens hood and you'll probably never get another finger print again.

I would never "blow" or "breathe on the lens". Tends to make nasty little things grow :(

Don't spit, just breathe on the lens. Very effective.

If you don't use a lens hood, you are very likely to get your greasy fingerprints on the filter. If you do use a lens hood (the one Canon recommends for your lens), you'll never get a fingerprint on the lens again.

If you must use a filter, you should also use a lens hood. Cleaning fingerprints off a filter frequently is not something you want to do, as it's usually easier to scratch up a filter than the lens' front element.

Microfiber or a lens cloth and the issue is gone. LenPen if you have $ to spare.

+1 for a Lenspen, an inexpensive way to remove oils from a lens/filter/lcd screen :D

Anyone use those "pre moistened" lens cleaning cloths that the optical stores sell? Zeiss is one who makes them.

They look like those moistened towelettes you get at restaurants.

I've been using those pre moistened lens cloths for years. Wal-Mart sells them by the optical dept. 50 in a box for about $3.

I'd send it back to Canon for service.

At $10, the Lenspen is the best. No more cloths and fluids to carry around. It fits anywhere and does a super job.
