Both are effective. I use lens pens but find that they saturate much quicker than a large microfiber cloth. It's all about surface area in this case. I tend to use a 16 inch x 16 inch microfiber cloth stored in a clean ziplock bag and am careful about the oils or anything else that transfers onto the cloth.

The microfiber will last quite a long time for cleaning. 11 dollars at calumet. The lens pen will only last a little while with frequent usage - I average about 1 every month or so. Cost for a lens pen is right around 10 dollars. I stopped buying the lens pen on the 5th one. They are handy, but the bang for the buck ratio wasn't doing me any good.

I'd send it back to Canon for service.

;)

And then I'll buy it from Adorama's refurb department at a 10% discount.

Another thumbs up for Lenspen.

VERY serious. I shoot an average of 3000 to 5000 shots PER assignment. And some of them in not so friendly conditions. Always carry a supply of Eclipse tissue, the microfiber, surgical scissors (to cut the eclipse tissue with), spatula that is cut to the width of the sensors that I'm using, etc. Basically a complete cleaning kit. And that includes both versions of the Eclipse cleaner.

I have MANY lens pens sitting around, and they're all saturated. The only thing they're good for are for the little brushes, but even they're fairly well loaded.

As long as you use your equipment it will get dirty. No worry, just learn to clean it properly and it will last for a very very long time.

That's all I use my LensPen for. Never used the other end, not once. Don't care to, either.
