I have a Quantum CZ cable and turbo battery, but don't have it handy at the moment. Ever since I saw the release of the Canon cp-e4 battery pack I been thinking of making one my self or just by a knockoff.

But I did an internet search looking for the wiring diagrams for the HV port on the Canon flashes where this CZ connects. I am thinking that the battery packs just put out 12vts from looking at some specs. the connector uses three pins.

Without being able to check it I am thinking that one pin is grounf and anouther is +12vts and the third is -12vts. Is this correct and which pin is what? ALso do you have any wiring diagrams that you can post.

I've also been very interested in this.

Though somehow I don't think that the battery cranks out 12V. I'm personally thinking 6V. AA batteries have a "nominal" rating of 1.5V, but rechargeable batteries are running at 1.2V. My point being it would be fairly hard to get a continuous 12V out of 8AAs that are in the CP-E4 for example.

My theory would be that it's running 2x4 AA's in parallel to get the additional power for faster recycling. It would be really nice if somebody with a CP-E4 could confirm and measure the pins.

I've been thinking about getting a 2s3p Li-Ion battery and making a battery.

I'm also looking to get the plugs somewhere and right now the cheapest I can come up with is buying a $30 cable just to cut the plug off... Wish there was an easier way to get the plug.

The CP-4E supplies a high Voltage to the compatible flash units.

It is not just a simple battery holder connecting 8 cells in series for 12 Volts.

I suspect the Voltage is a few hundred Volts. Voltage high enough to feed the power capacitor directly.

If you are expecting to just plug in a sundry 12 Volts to that specialized plug, I think you will be disappointed.

Enjoy! Lon

Or it's a voltage-regulated type, with as you say, 8xAA, and then a 7812 or summat keeping the 12v constant.
Ooooor, it's a DC-DC (boost) based circuit, turning 2+v into much, much more

Lon,

You have obviously a lot more experience with this than I would ever have, but are you sure about this? Just seems slightly hard to believe that that's the truth. For that to happen, the CP-E4 would need a pretty sturdy capacitor inside. And running high-voltage over a coiled cable like that may not be advisable.

But obviously I may be totally wrong...

This might or might not be of value. Quantum Turbo with cable for Metz flash (Turbo connector as viewed from pin side)...
