Probably my favorite shot from yesterday. Taken at the State Fish Hatchery in Hackettstown, New Jersey. I don't think any fish are being actively raised there right now, but still abundant wild fish and frogs that are supporting a large Green Heron population as well as several GBH's.

I really like this shot. The DOF and the color contrast are great. The Heron has such a unique body shape.

Thanks Brett, I was lucky to have morning light pointing in the right direction for this one. Yes, Green Herons do look particularly stocky. When they are curious or alarmed they occasionally do stretch their necks out though, and then you really seem their resemblance to the rest of the heron family.

Thanks Steve, since the native ecology of New Jersey contains a lot of swamps and freshwater lakes, Green Herons are abundant and pretty widely distributed here.

Personally, since I haven't traveled at all lately, I'd really like some variety... maybe some desert birds!

Very nice shot. These little greens are fun birds. Some of them will let you get real close if you don't scare off what they are hunting. :)

Thanks Mitch, they sure do have a lot of personality. Wish I could get some close shots of Little Blue's and Tricolored Herons... someday...

Love Green Herons and this is a great shot. It looks like a painting. Very serene and calm.
