Heading to the PCH here in October, looking to hit Hurst Castle, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Napa and obviously scenery on the way

I can either do the 18-55 IS Kit lens and Canon 10-22
OR
17-55 f/2.8 IS

The f/2.8 would def be useful at the aquarium, went to one this past weekend with the kit lens... and got some OK shots

If I had to choose between those options, I'd go with option 1. Having an UWA is really nice for the CA coast.

Can your budget do something like a Sigma 10-20 and Tamron 17-50?

My first choice would be an ultrawide like the Canon 10-22 and the 18-55 kit lens.

The 17-55mm is a nice lens but may not be wide enough.

I'll go against the grain and say 17-55 2.8. Both choices are good. I would make sure you test out the UWA before you get it, if that's what you decide to do. I bought one and found 17mm was plenty wide for my landscape/scenery shooting tastes.

Well I already have option 1, but I really want the 17-55 f/2.8 for the aquarium shots, and really in order to get it I'd have to sell the 10-22

How often do you shoot below 17mm? How bad will you miss that range? How much do you need/want a faster aperture? After you answer those questions I think you should have your answer.

I bought an UWA Sigma 10-20 for my trip to Napa/Sonoma back in May. I also had my Tamron 17-50 with me. I still used the Tamron 80% of the time but the Sigma did great at those times I needed wider.

Why not just rent an UWA for the trip?

edit: i just saw that you already owned the 10-22. silly me.

Not a bad idea though if the OP doesn't shoot super wide a lot. Purchase the 17-55 and rent an UWA lens for those times that its really needed/wanted.

For hearst castle particularly indoors something wider than 17mm on a crop body (and faster like f2.8) will be better. For other locations, it doesn't matter much.
