High ISO speed noise reduction

What are your thoughts on using the in-camera high speed noise reduction (using a 40D, it's under C.FnII #2).

Will be shooting a football game Saturday night. Small college game in a high school stadium. Trying to re-visit my camera settings from last year. Lighting will be a challenge, meaning high ISO settings)

Never have used this feature.

What are your thoughts and experiences?

Do you have/use any PP NR? (NeatImage, NoiseNinja, NoiseWare)?

Do you shoot RAW+JPEG? (to have the best of both worlds)

I prefer doing NR in PP... a lot more control. NR can look worse than ISO noise unless done properly.

I agree - I do any noise reduction in post work -- Personally I would not be afraid to shoot high iso for sports - most of the photos for web/newsprint are pretty small and the noise is not noticeable.

I shoot night football in RAW and do my noise reduction in post processing, in DPP if it's minor or Noise Ninja if it's really bad.

I'd suggest that you try a little of both methods (in camera and in PP) and see which you like better.

I don't like the lag time that enabling C.FnII #2 causes.

When in doubt, I trust the power of my laptop over the relatively puny microprocessors in my camera. Plus, as noted above, the more you task the camera's processor to do, the slower it might do something else that you actually NEED it to do, thus slowing your ability to shoot.

I'm a fan of Noise Ninja, but Neat Image also gets high marks.

The only time I ever do is for real long night time exposures.
