Hi all,
I am going on vacation to Tibet/Nepal in the next two weeks and am interested in hearing opinions on two lens choices, or other options. I currently have a tamron 17-50 and a 50/1.4 on my canon 30D. Obviously I would like to take something with more range. The two lenses I am considering are the 85/1.8 and the 100/2 . My main goal for this lens would be to be able to attain shots of people in the towns from a comfortable distance, something I wouldn't feel is achievable with the 50, and also general telephoto use. Are there any other options and what do you think of the 85/100 options for what i would like to use it for on the crop body? Thanks.

Take your 17-50, and 50/1.4 along with you. Rent a 70-200 just for the trip. Are you goind to do some of the vast scenery? You'll need wider than 17 perhaps.

I think gasrocks has some good advice. If you want to travel lighter, a 55-250 IS could work well too. A refurb one would not cost too much more than renting a 70-200L for a week or 2.

TBH, I don't think the difference between 50 and 85, or even 100 is going to be significant for travel photos. I'd find a 200mm lens or just go with what you have.

I also think a UWA could be nice, but if money is tight you can always take 3+ shots and stich when you get home.

The only suggestion I can make is travel light.. I've been within 140klms from the Tibetan border on the Tibetan Plateaux on the Western Sichuan end at 4000-4500 metres.. Any strenuous activity will knock you around, irrespective how fit you are.. Acclimatise yourself gradually to the altitude..

The scenery is drop dead beautiful with the biggest sky I've ever seen.. Follow the river valleys and you'll run into small Tibetan villages with very friendly people.. Around September-October the nomadic Tibetans drive their herds off the plains into the river valleys around the towns and villages..The entire landscape is dotted with black felt tents..

Sorry to wax lyrical and offering no good advice..

Travel safe..
