Would have better to show us unsharpened crops. The Leica is a nice lens but not very good up close.

I just tested a copy on an old Leica SLR and I was floored by the quality. I was standing about 15 feet away from a tree stump and it focused amazingly well. I have closeup covered. I am looking for a small moderately long high IQ backpacking lens and this one fits the bill rather well.

Anyone have the APO 2.8 version that would like to chime in?

So let's expose the bad part of the Telyt with this "awful bokeh" shot showing how the lens is clearly overcorrected.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The subject was very far and pavid, so the shot has been heavily cropped to a ~600mm FOV, in the original shot the rings are barely noticeable due to their size.

I didn't have the 70-200/2.8 to compare, sorry, but after all I got the Telyt to travel light !

I prefer the 70-200 bokeh, but some people like this kind of bokeh... and I can live with this.

That kind of bokeh can be resolved in PP. The lens blur tool is really nice for just that.

Manual focus at 180/3.4 is a lottery without Live View, I hope the Eg-S focusing screen helps (should be delivered in a few days).

The Leica I tried had a split focus screen and it was really easy to focus the 180. That is a great lens and will solve my moderately long problem quite nicely. I'm contemplating the 2.8 version as well though a much deeper dent on the wallet.

Curious, what did you pick your copy up for?

That actually fixed it, thanks ;)

Got it from a friend. Let's say I consider 500 euros a good price for a mint copy.

While I definitely have respect for the 3.4 as a lens, wow, would be a better statement, I purchased the 2.8 version this morning.

Pricey for sure but something tells me ... a little bird perhaps ... that this lens is something to experience and it's not much heavier than the 3.4. What is addressed is closeup and vignetting issues. The jury is out on how well it does at infinity but if it's anywhere near the 3.4 things will be looking up in my near future.

Can't wait to get this lens out in the field!

I think a better test might be the EF 70-200/4 L IS lens vs the Leica 70-180/2.8 APO. I have both and have not gotten around to doing a side by side test yet. Probably because I know what the results will be.

Can I ask why you have both lenses? When do you use the EF instead of the Leica?

Now that would be a great test to see !
Or post at least a few shots from the 70-180 ;)

UPDATE
--------
I just tested today a perfect copy of the 70/200L IS f/4 on the same subject vs my f/2.8 and their performance is identical (apart from a little less chromatic aberration on the f/4 which is barely noticeable).

And here are the results BTW:

UPDATE
---------
Found a very interesting article on the Telyt-R 180/3.4, by Heinz Richter, where he discusses how this lens was engineered to be able to resolve up to 450 lines/mm:

http://www.gmpphoto.com/manufa1.doc (external link)

After 35 years, it still deserves to be compared with the EF 200/2 L IS, as in this other very interesting article by Marco Cavina (a must-read, even if you have to google-translate it ;)):

If anything, the contrast is more similar to the legendary 200 1.8L EF. The 2.0 version has better contrast and is one of the best lenses that I've shot with in the Canon lineup.

Nice article!
