Hello,
I currently use an older version of Photoshop for color management etc. and shoot mostly Ilford XP2 super which is a chromogenic B&W film. Because I don't shoot a lot it's like having to relearn Photoshop each time I use it. One thing I do use Photoshop for that is important to me, aside from getting the image ready to print, is the ability to put a selenium tint on the image prior to printing. I like the selenium tint because it makes the blacks richer (deeper) and seems to add depth to the image as a whole.
Is there other software available that is easier to use than Photoshop yet would allow me to add the selenium look to an image along with the normal uses for such software( cropping, balance etc)? Thank you.

Tim

Does anyone use a software that will do the things PS does yet much easier to use. Does anyone use a selenium tone for B&W with the software they use?

Hello Tim,

I haven't done that type of thing:), but you might check out Photoshop Elements as a "simpler" program with nice capabilities "inherited" from Photoshop.

I just googled "photoshop elements selenium" and here's the page I found:

http://www.google.com …otoshop+elements+selenium (external link)

So, it looks like people are getting results. Check it out!

Thank you Tony. I was hoping for a few software packages to crop up so I could look at them as well. I just need a relatively simple package to handle the toning along with the usual cropping, adjustments etc.
PS is a heavy duty package and I use probably less than 20% of its capabilities. Hopefully there may be a few other packages suggested that can accomplish my rather simple requirements. Thank you again Tony.

NIK Silver Efex Pro (external link) will do selenium toned B&W. (Also does titanium, uranium and unobtainium.) NIK has 15 day free trials to download and try out.

Hi Chas, That product is interesting to be sure. Do you use it and what do you think of it? Have you tried the selenium tone before, I have seen a few tones that i didn't like because there wasn't enough purple in them to make the blacks really dense and give the entire image that wonderful look. Thank you.
