Well, I'm 16 and going to college now. I'm going to be the school photographer, so I was looking around at older cameras with manual lenses.

I found a Canon Rebel G for $195. What do you think of that camera?

Any other suggestions?

Under $500 would be great. Being a new college student doesn't leave much money!

The Rebel G is an EOS camera; I believe you are in the wrong forum.

That said, 195 for that camera is wayyy too much money. That's slightly less than what they were going for brand new, I believe. Hell, for $200USD you can get a used Digital Rebel, not to mention a 10d or 20d, which are very fine digital SLRs. You will obviously save money with no film costs that way!

The new G11 (appropriate for this forum) would eat up most of your budget, but might be the answer. You would have to wait for it as it won't be out until October. Check out the conversations on it. Congrats on the college at age 16 thing!

I would say to take your time and look for a decent used Canon EOS 20D w/ kit lens. This will get you started into SLR, and you can add lens and flashes later on.

I have the G11 on order right now, so I won't be able to tell you yet if it will suffice for school photography.

School is supposed to be about learning, I guess.

With that in mind, I think the right idea is to go for a proper SLR. The EOS 20D is a great suggestion. You can start out in green box mode, and gradually broaden your horizons to full manual as you begin to understand the limitations and abilities of the system.

One great thing about it is that the rig you buy secondhand will maintain a lot of its value, so you can use it or a while, get extra lenses, whatever. When you feel the need to upgrade (or *gasp* give up being a tog!) you can sell the stuff for nearly what you paid for it.

A P&S like a g10 or g11 might give you decent results, but you won't learn much about the craft.

Congrats on making it to college early, that is cool.

I think once you factor in film and developing costs (25-50 cents per picture taken), you will find a used digital SLR will be cheaper than a film camera. Unless, of course, the school is picking up the tab for that. Something like a used or refurbished 20D, Rebel XT, Rebel XTi, or Rebel XS should be available in your budget. Save enough on the body to get an 18-55 IS and a 50mm 1.8 and you should be set to get started.

Good luck.

Don't get a film SLR camera if you're starting out. You'll waste a lot of time and money, and it might even turn you off from photography after a while.

I agree, that should be plenty for a school paper.

Not to be a traitor to the Canon brand which is has a great system, but for a budget DSLR you cannot beat the Pentax K2000 right now. At $419 with a lens it comes with image stablization in the body and you can use any lens pentax or 3rd party makers made from the 70s on up and have image stablization to boot. If you go with this one, make sure you get the updated DA II lens with it.

Hope this helps,

You're crazy. I thought 17 was too young for me, so I slacked senior year.

I gotta say, what everyone else says is spot on. I loved my XT and would get another if it'd do me any good. Great little cameras, who knows I might for an IR camera.
