Just bought my first Canon, an EOS 1D, which came with a software CD. I installed it but when I click on the Capture folder, nothing happens. The stitching feature does open, but not Capture. I can still process RAW through Photoshop Elements, but I'd like to try the Capture. Did I miss something, or do something wrong?

Perhaps it was a result of anxiety.

that's possible.
i'm not sure if you have to connect the camera w/ usb before opening it (i didn't even try the software yet... just EOS utility)
but did you keep it connected?

If you are talking about a Classic 1D, then you need to use the FireWire cable that came with the camera to connect the camera to the PC for image transfer. Not every computer has a Firewire port. If yours has, and you don't have the original cable, then you can buy a standard Firewire cable cheaply. Just make sure it has one small and one large Male and Female connector

A much better solution would be to use a USB Card Reader and take the CF card out of the 1D and put it in the reader. Forget about Firewire transfers.

Hope that helps.

The other task you will have to complete eventually, is to download and update all the Canon software that came on the original CD. To do the updates, you must have first installed the original Canon software from the CD.

Go to the Canon website (support tab) to get the correct software updates for the 1D.

Thanks all. Yes, I've rebooted many times. And I do load the pictures into the computer with a card reader; no problem there. And I can open them and process RAW through Photoshop Elements, but I want to try Capture also. Luke may be onto something; the CD that came with the camera was a generic Memorex, not anything that looked like it was issued by Canon, so it's probably a copy. It's probably old and needing updating.

When you talk about the capture folder I guess that you are talking about remote shooting?, if so you have to have the camera conected to the PC via a firewire cable normally supllied with camera, when you have the software correctly setup your images should go into this folder, is this your question.

All Canon CD's that are included in the boxes are out of date. It doesn't make any difference that the previous owner has made a copy. You have to install the Canon suite of software from that original and then you have to download and do the updates. You can't download updated master files. (there is a hack if you don't have the original CD, but that's another thread).

You haven't been clear enough about what you are trying to do!!! There isn't a Canon application called Capture although you may be referring to tethered shooting, not file transfer. Or are you talking about automatic transfer of files from camera to PC when you connect the camera body directly. Two different things!! FIRST, you have to confirm that you do have the FireWire connection in addition to the USB.

Canon's free RAW converter (to which most people would give higher marks than Elements) is called Digital Photo Professional. currently in Version 3.6. Normally you would have to have a previous version already installed in order to update. The trick is to download and install Vs. 1.0 from here http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/sdl/data/dpp100-e.exe (external link) and then go to the Canon site http://www.usa.canon.com …tegoryid=314&modelid=7474 (external link) enter your operating system and download the update.
