If I was to buy a 2nd hand camera from the US is there anything I need to convert so it all works here, like plugs for battery charger etc? If so where do I buy this stuff and how much does it cost?

I had a 1D classic and it came with the charger but it was bought in the US so it had the wrong adapter. I used the plug from my 400D's charger because it was a standard figure 8 one.

I have seen other batteries that look like 2 tubes joined together.....sort of, guessing they're the figure 8s, not explaining myself very well sorry. I dont know why my battery is different but would the chargers be the same?

That's exactly what I did. I used my 400D's charger cord.
