If I was to buy a 2nd hand camera from the US is there anything I need to convert so it all works here, like plugs for battery charger etc? If so where do I buy this stuff and how much does it cost?

I believe AUS uses 220V plugs... am i right?
then you might have to get a travel converter or a plug for it.

Whippet,, all you need is a US to Australian power adapter for your charger.. You can buy one at any travel luggage store for around 20 bucks..

Yep I'd like to know that too, basically I want to know if there's any disadvantages to buying from overseas.
thanks Replaces and Yogestee for your replies.

The Canon OEM charger and most 3rd party chargers as well, will work anywhere in the world but you will need adapter prongs for appropriate electrical outlets....

Exactly kitacanon.. I've taken my chargers to quite a few countries,,China and around SE Asia, including Australia.. Camera, mobile phone, Ipod chargers for example..

The voltage you read on the charger is the mean or average voltage.. AC is an alternating voltage.. The voltage can peak and trough as high as plus and minus 360 volts at either 50 hertz or 60 hertz..

No damage can be done as long as you use the correct adapter for that country..

You won't even need adapters for the chargers (from a travel shop or similar). I had a 1D classic and it came with the charger but it was bought in the US so it had the wrong adapter. I used the plug from my 400D's charger because it was a standard figure 8 one.

Good point Moose - 99.9% of them are all figure 8 plugs, so you just need to note the input voltage, which is typically 110 to 230 or 240 - and you're all set.

Canon Aus will service and repair ANY canon body, irrespective of where you purchase it. I've had them service a 1ds of mine I bought a while back in the states and there were no problems with taking the camera in and doing the repair.

Cheers!

When you say a figure 8 is that the shape of the battery, cause I have a 400D and the battery is more like a little brick, with a flat bottom and a rounded top. I have seen other batteries that look like 2 tubes joined together.....sort of, guessing they're the figure 8s, not explaining myself very well sorry. I dont know why my battery is different but would the chargers be the same?

No mate.. It's the shape of the lead/plug that goes into your charger..

xxxD batteries are different to xxD batteries but the principles of chargers are the same..

Whip im an aussie sparkie & AS60038 says the voltage for australia is now 230 +10% -6%. Has been for some time.

As you will see in this photo pretty much everything is now capable of taking 100 to 240 volts at either US freq which is 60 Hz or aussie freq at 50Hz.

Pending the fig 8 plug option not working....any electrical powered item will come with a US male plug that for obvious reasons will not fit our power outlets so you need to go to a chemist/bag store/ebay etc etc & get an adaptor to allow the US plug in one side whilst the other side has our conventional 3 pins for our wall outlets. That or find a sparkie to swap the USA plug to one of ours.

That's exactly what I did. I used my 400D's charger cord.
