Just playing around with my 5D at night before it started raining (and a little after)

Mahalo Mike. :D

Here is another different version of what I posted in the last a few days. It's a risky spot to get shots due to waves but I like this spot. The worst can happen is to get another used 5d.

I blended 2 exposures in PS, one for sky and one for the foreground.

Another stunner!

correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't this constitute HDR then? hahaha, i always looked at your flickr gallery with the "HDR free" tag next to it and i was perplexed about how you were able to get so much dynamic range. i've played with all sorts of different filters and i haven't been able to get such a defined sunset with properly exposed foreground subjects like you're able to. is exposure blending your dirty secret? ;)

I think what he means is that he took one photo where he exposed for the forground and another where he exposed for the sky and then masked them in photoshop. Sort of like a manual GND filter.

oh.. i was always under the impression that any image that incorporates more than one exposure in order to display more dynamic range than possible with a single exposure is considered HDR. if that isn't the definition, what is?

Yes that's basically what I mean and been doing. My goal is to achieve the natural results for the images so hopefully you won't be able to tell whether I have done any blending. My favorite is to use the gradient tools which are like GNDs. I tried Photomatix before, but soon after I was convinced that I would never be able to achieve the natural results I wanted. Today majority of the HDRs done with Photomatix or other softwares have distinct unnatural flavors. But some people like it.

One from last Saturday at Diamond Head Beach looking East. This spot could be good for sunrise.

Shot was taken about 30 minutes after sunset. A single shot no blending. It was underexposed however I was able to recover it from RAW.
