I've been considering going back to a 5D for a while now, and looking through this thread every day for the last week or so has finally pushed me over the edge. I should have a 5D in my hands on Weds.... ![]() It's a beautiful machine! Bet you can't wait! Ashley Taylor

Just a quick question for everyone who cares to answer. I'm a hobbyist and this will be my only camera. My main shooting will be my 4 y/o son, dog, wife, landscapes, and cityscapes. I will have a 70-300is for my long range lens. However, not sure what to do about shorter range and indoors. Assume a $600 budget for used lenses, would you suggest: 1) a 17-40L or 2) a Tamron 28-75 2.8 (the only lens I currently own) plus a 85 1.8 combo (or 100 2.0)? Thanks for any insight. btw: great pics on this page by Ashley and Ingard! ![]() Well, lots of people will recommend the 17-40L - and rightly so. It's a very sharp lens and not a bad price, if the f/4 aperture is fast enough then it could be the one to get. It depends if you want the ultra wide perspective. Ashley Taylor

tonylong ...winded More info | Oct 25, 2009 17:31 | #1989 Well, Portland, OR had its Zombie Walk yesterday. I came back with over 500 shots although it was very difficult lighting with bright sun and lots of shade and having to constantly be on the move. After deleting all the terrible shots, I am just now going through the 400 remaining, but here is at least one of the first "keepers", taken with the 5D and 24-70: Tony

It's a very sharp lens and not a bad price, if the f/4 aperture is fast enough then it could be the one to get. It depends if you want the ultra wide perspective. The Tammy 28-75 covers a useful focal range too, and you get the constant f2.8 aperture - but you may miss the 17-27 mm you would gain with the 17-40 - it really depends on if 28 mm is wide angle enough. I own the Sigma 24-70 f2.8, and it seems a great match for my 5D, but I also have sigmas 12-24mm for when I need the ultra wide goodness. ![]() As for the 85mm f1.8, I swear by that lens, it truly is a fantastic purchase that won't disappoint. Mine is very sharp at f1.8 (with some purple fringing in high contrast situations,) and razor sharp from f 2.5 onwards. I love it! I love the shallow DOF you can acheive at fast apertures. As for the 100mm f2, it's pretty much personal preference as they are both great lenses - the 100mm would get you in a little tighter for portraits, which may be useful. They're both obviously excellent in low light situations. If it were me, I'd take the 28-70 and the 85mm f1.8 over just the 17-40L, seems like a slightly more versitile combo...You can always hang on and save up for an ultra wide at another time. Thanks for the opinion. As much as I've been a fan of the 17-40 in the past, I have some fear that it wouldn't be long enough for an everyday lens, so this is the way I was leaning also. I normally am pretty decisive with my lens choices, but it's been a while since I've had a full frame camera, hence the indecision. Mark
