If you don't know anyone closeby with one you can test out, then get into a camera shop and hold a 5D2. There isn't much difference in feel between the two.

Write speeds etc are as good as any....i've not found much diff between the 5D, 5D2, 50D and 40D...until of course you go nuts with the shutter! You'll not regret it! ;)

Congrats Geno, awesome shot!

Just wanted to pop in here quick and ask you guys a few questions about this camera. I've been seriously looking at ditching crop and grabbing this camera.
Camera speed wise (processing, write speeds, ect) how will it compare to my Xti? After renting a 50d I was shocked at how slow my Xti really was.
This camera is old, like 5 years old. Does it still hold up well, 5 years later? $1000 is a lot to spend on old technology, unless it really holds up to today's standards.
Ergonomics, obviously better than my Rebel, but what is it like? Solid, heavy, chunky, ect.

Thanks everyone

To quote the old blues tune "built for comfort not built for speed, I got what the bad girls need". The 5D simply produces great images. Its great for portrait work and landscapes. If you need speed it might not be the camera for you. like you say the technology is several years old and similar to what you might find in a 30D or perhaps your xti, but the improved IQ and iso performance make it still a considerable value at current used prices.

I just want to have my hobby pay for itself for once. Boating has/is cost me a fortune and moorage and insurance is coming up again... :)

I was just thinking, Tiff, Mike, Alejandro and all the great portraitists we have here, any of you want to have a go with that photo and see how much younger you can make her? :) Here's the link to the original for those of you that want a go.

Have some fun!

I'm still working on getting things to pay for themselves.

And, maybe I'll play later, but honestly, she's beautiful just as she is and I wouldn't want to change a thing.

I shoot almost all landscapes and macro but now I've started with portrait work. I was getting into sports but it's really not for me. I do mostly still photos if that is what you're wanting to know.

You will have no problem with speed on the 5D. It's not often you need 6.5 fps or more for any of those things.

I guess its because Im not a "sports" photographer, but I dont even know how people can need 8fps, let alone 10fps..I can see for series shots and what not..but for anything else it seems like overkill. But then again you can just spray and pray and you'll probably get good shots even if they weren't set up.

I could see basketball would be more of a frame it, then shoot it type thing rather than spray it.

Got this in my email last night:

Congrats! That's awesome. The shot is worthy. :)

On the photo critique discussion, I always appreciate every comment and critique I can get on anything I post, good or bad. As long as it addresses the image and doesn't criticize the model's looks, I welcome it. I think I've improved thanks to comments on POTN, and that's always a good thing. :)
