I cannot get my A40 to be recognized by my Toshiba notebook. The Canon SW is loaded withthe Canon driver. The computer recognizes the presence of the hardware via the USB connection but the camera itself is not detected. It wants the driver usbscan.sys. The driver is not on the computer nor on any disks provided by either company. Toshiba only supplies an OEM (?) version of Windows XP so files are not extractable if it were there. I tried going to Microsoft pages and finding the driver usbscan.sys but it seems very convoluted and I have not found it. The computer is a gift for a family member at college. I am a Mac user myself and find this whole thing annoying. Why should such a critical file be missing ? Where does my problem reside ? I have made many calls to the techs at both companies, tried their tedius tactics, and found it was wasting time as no solution appeared. All I need is for the computer to successfully recognize, read and import the data from the Canon camera. Please email me if you have any definite solutions or suggestions. Many thanks if you are able to help !

Heya Lepak,

The usbscan.sys file is in the following location on the cd, (depending on which version of the Solution Disk you have)

For this example, we'll say that your cd rom drive is d:

d:\software\tw_usb\other\english\win_2k98\camera2

OR

d:\software\Powershot A40 TWAIN

Depending on which version of the disk you have.

Hope this helps!

Mitch

Hi Mitch

Thanks for the reply and so soon. The computer is away at college (but close). I do not recall a Solution Disk. Does it come with the camera or the computer ? Sorry to seem so uniformed about that.

Im pretty sure he means the disk that came with the camera. You should have two cd's. One with arcsoft software, and the other has the stuff u want.

Lepak,

Yip, that's it. The solution disk is what we get here in Australia. But yeah, not the arcsoft disk, but the other disk, the one used to install Zoombrowser, etc etc etc.

I *think* from memory as well, the usbscan.sys file is on the winXP cd under d:\i386 , compressed in there. But I can't remember for sure, but I know for a fact that it's on the Canon cd.
