Best Windows Photo Viewer App?

What is the best software app for viewing digital stills on LCD monitor? The deafult Windows Picture and Fax viewer (Windows XP) gives rather soft images on my LCD screen. I find Quicktime Picture Viewer gives much sharper results, but it is not possible to zoom in or out, or to easily move from shot to shot.
Any comments or suggestions are welcome.

Irfanview (external link).

Not sure why Windows Picture and Fax viewer shows soft though, it doesn't do anything to the image that would cause that.

Breeze Browser, although its display is so sharp I"ve dialled it back a bit.

Use firefox ;)

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Unless you're viewing at 100% (dot-for-dot/pixel-for-pixel) the softness is probably from whatever algorithm the software uses to fit the image to the screen, and is probably designed around speed rather than accuracy.

Like OhGod mentions, compression can cause some loss of detail. If you really want to control the process, you could resize a copy of your images to an appropriate size, like one that would "fit" in this forum, and then sharpen the smaller image.

There is a marked difference between the displayed image with both viewers I am using. I am viewing large tiff files, typically around 30 mb; I will try out the various suggestions made as a further comparison.
Thanks to all who replied.

To overcome any softness issues caused by resizing, batch-resize all images to a size that fits the screen...

+1 for FastStone Image Viewer. It's the best, and it's free. Works flawlessly with Vista.

Picasa.

Picasa does not allow to compare (2 or 3 or 4) images side by side. Try FastStone and you will dump Picasa (which is what I did).

I believe Microsoft also offers Windows Live Photo gallery for XP as a free download, which is better than Picture/Fax viewer.
Here it is:

if you plan to use vista, be happy to know that the default picture viewer is colour managed! (auto switches profiles for multi-monitor users too)
