Try here
Also look here and here

thanks again, i'll try all those. i've read through that first link, though, and can say that i use and have used EOS Utility for as long as i've had the camera.

SDHC readers are $5 shipped on ebay. Just get one and forget about all the software crap. Insert SD card, Plug it in to USB port, copy files, delete, done.

i will do that as a last resort (or get one, anyway), but like Rayk said, it would be nice to figure this out considering i've spent so much time trying to do that!

Just looked through the owner's manual - sorry, different menu and no similar setting.

Oops!

thanks anyway :D.

I got that same problem as u Serenade but with my 50D. I figured out after several attemps with 3 sets of my computers, one laptop and two desktop at home and office. The conclusion of the root of my problem which may or may be not your case is if you got any other "imaging device" installed on your computer such as scanner or printer with scanner atttached b4 connecting your canon camera. You got a chance to get this problem. Even worse, if you think that uninstalling driver of that imaging device and then newly install of your canon software will help you solve this problem. probably not (you can try it). I tried it but it didn't work for me. Now i came out with the other 2 solutions you might want to try and and it worked for me.
1st option, format your computer and fresh install your winXP. Now you can install Canon software b4 connecting your camera to your computer. This method should work for you all the time.
2nd option, use System restore function, try to restore your computer to the point b4 any imaging device driver had been installed on your computer (I wish your computer hadn't been turn this System restore function off). Then you can install Canon software and connect your camera. The result at least what i got now is my 50D has been recognized and I can directly transfer my photo to my computer. But I still got another problem which I cannot figure it out how to solve it. Canon EOS Utility doesn't work so i cannot use remote shooting function but DPP and zoom browser work ok. so be with it.
Hope this will help.

There are some remedies and procedures to follow if you have a problem connecting your camera to your computer included on the CD that was supplied with your camera. It's the CD labelled 'Software Instruction Manuals (or similar).

i can tell you that definitely isn't the case for this computer! the only other thing connected to the computer is a WiFi internet cable. Thanks, though :)

i'm about ready to give up now... in the device manager my canon shows up under "other devices" (as Canon Digital Camera) with a yellow question mark beside it. after double clicking it, in the "state" box it says:

Les pilotes de ce périphérique ne sont pas installés. (Code 28 )
Cliquez sur Réinstaller le pilote pour réinstaller les pilotes de ce périphérique.

translation: basically that the needed software isn't installed. click "reinstall" to reinstall the software for this device.

when EVERYTHING IS INSTALLED! i don't get it! but just for kicks, i click where it says, and i get the update device wizard telling me to insert the CD if there is one and to let the computer search for the software needed. so, i do that. still, nothing, it says it can't find the needed software.

Just a "mad" off the wall idea, uninstall the software and try reinstalling it with the anti virus software turned off, also check by some chance, is the firewall blocking something.

I'd like to clear up the symptoms. You say windows doesn't recognize the camera, but can you perform file functions with other softwares, such as drag and drop photos - etc? Do you see the data card files with other apps?

no.. I can't do anything with it.

When the camera active, there will be an exclamation mark at device manager, Imaging device.
Then it is gone. And I get "Found new hardware" again when I press camera button (shutter button), but windwos still didn't recognize my camera.

I think it is virus fault... my windows got viruses
I'll try to connect my camera to different computer at Monday.

unfortunately that is a problem with windows it its caused in the first place by not loading the driver software before you have connected the hardware , as its now been a long time since I abandoned windows and pc in favour of macs i am note sure how to sort it out

I ad this same problem when I had my 450D. My problem was I plugged the camera into the computer and turned it on before I installed the Canon software. Afterwards I read where you are not to do this. Also uninstalled the software and reinstalled but still no luck. I finally bought a card reader to use on the desktop. Installed the software first on my laptop and all worked well. I used the laptop for tethered shooting and card reader to download images.

AH.. maybe that the case.

Yes, I admit I connect my camera before installing the software after re-install my windows.

So, how to fix it ? I hope we can fix it without re install my windows ...
