Wow! Dad used an SLR when he was in the Navy and has some damage to the Saratoga that he sailed on.

Oh, that's a very long story. As the Pacific Star was sinking, the bales of pot were pouring out of a secret hold that was discovered. For a while, high grade Thai pot was floating about in the Pacific. Around a thousand pounds. We corralled them up with our small boats and their life raft and secured them all in one of the forward holds. They stayed there until we pulled into San Diego where the DEA took over.
That's the really edited version.
VERY cool stories!

But, I like CSI!
I've never seen a single episode of NCIS. I should check it out sometime.
I love NCIS. Mike got me hooked on it!!!

I already mentioned this in RRTP, but we had dinner at an incredibly good Cantonese restuarant in San Mateo tonight. Probably the best I've had in many, many years.
Hong Kong Causeway Bay Restaurant. We ate there by default. Our regular restaurant across the street (Joy Luck Place) is being remodeled, so we went to the Hong Kong Causeway. What a happy accident. We'll probably not be going back to Joy Luck Place.
Sounds yummy!!!

1. Former US Navy vessel re-commissioned as the USCGC Alex Haley, WMEC 39.
2. First cutter named after an author, who was also, at one time, a cook in the Coast Guard before making it big in print.
3. Stationed in Kodiak.
4. Call sign NZPO
5. My son's first unit.

VERY COOL!!!

She's intriguing to me because she was converted from the USS Edenton (ATS-1), a US Navy salvage and diving ship. The first time I saw her after the Coast Guard converted her she still had some of the distinctive superstructure (removed by the time this picture was taken) that was part of her heavy lifting gear.
This is what she looked like in Navy service...

If I had known that was your son's first ship, I wouldn't have bothered asking...
I just got a text from Heather telling me to stop testing you CG knowledge and go to bed...

Neat info John and funny on the text!!! hehehehehe

Yeah.... I was on the Citrus from 1982 to 1988. In this pic, I'm on the helm.... again. If you look all the way up top, on the flying bridge, you'll see a guy standing there. That's an old friend of mine: Patrick McAndrews, aka PattyMac. We were supposed to clear the decks as the helo flew by for the photo op, but PattyMac was the lookout.... he had to be there.
There's another guy on the starboard bridge wing working the azimuth. I think that's QM2 Anjain working on a nav fix.
The distinctive A-frame was a part of the old Buoy Tender equipment and really served no purpose. It was later removed in the yards during a pretty extensive refit.
How cool!!!

Oops. Some people don't understand that ships don't maneuver like sports cars....
giggle

I was hoping to find a copy of our standard press release photo online. It was taken during a hurricane north of Scapa Flow. The shot is from dead head on...and features a wave breaking over the flight deck.
Holy HOCK!!!!

Biggest surf I ever saw was 50 off of Oregon. Sustained winds at 70 kts with gusts up over 100. I guess that doesn't sound like much, but we were a pretty small boat at 180'. We were out there in case there was any SAR that came up. Like we'd be able to do anything if there were.
Nice record! I only puked once.... all over my boss...

We sailed on our cruise ship through some rough seas spawned from the year of non-stop September hurricanes in the Atlantic... Francis, then Ivan and Jeanne on the eastern side of the Bahamas while we were on the Western side... I kept a journal on our trip. We only had 20 ft seas... my now ex succumbed to the seas and got sick... me I was fine.... The biggest seas we had were 20 ft... Obviously I realize that cruise ships are designed differently but the boat was rocking pretty good...

It took a long time for me to break the habit of hooking my arm around my dish, holding my glass of whatever and being ready to tip my plate/cup/whatever to counteract the roll of the ship like a human gimbal. My table manners were never good to start with, but six years on a cutter didn't help matters at all.

hehehehehe

Eating was a waste of time, It would have been better for me to just tip the plate down the heads and cut out the middle man

Poor Neil!!! That's no fun!

I remember once, in rough seas, watching a huge jar of peanut butter break loose from the rubber matting that we had on the mess deck tables, roll across the table, launch off the aforementioned "lip" of the table and crash on the deck. We were all hanging on to our plates and cups during the roll, so no one could stop it's trajectory. When it was all over, we had about
64 oz. of a brown amoeba on deck.Peanut butter is really hard to get off of the deck, btw.
Bwahahahahahahaha I think my dad has a similar story... ya'd think that someone along the way would learn... hehehehe My dad was in the Navy.
