Okay. Maybe this is a question for Puddle Dan.

I want to make some hot and sour soup, and found a few recipes online. This is the list of ingredients that seems to be common to most of them, but I'm not familiar with some of these things. In fact, a couple of them sound like something you might have made up.

  • 1 cake tofu (fresh, if possible)
  • 2 ounces pork tenderloin
  • Marinade:
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon tapioca starch (or cornstarch)
  • Other:
  • 1/2 cup bamboo shoots
  • 2 tablespoons black fungus (Wood Ear) or Cloud Ear fungus
  • (or 3 - 4 Chinese dried black mushrooms or fresh mushrooms)
  • 1 small handful dried lily buds
  • 6 cups water (or 6 cups water and 1 cup Campbell's chicken broth)*
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons red rice vinegar, white rice vinegar, or red wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 Tbsp cornstarch dissolved in 1/4 cup water
  • 1 egg, beaten
Huh????

Whoa! Granulated sugar? Really? Weird. ;)

Reminds me of what my Dad once told me during one of those "man to man" talks....

"Never, ever ask the waiter of a Chinese restaurant what are the ingredients."

I tend to ramble. Feel free to put me on ignore.

I have been just setting her quiet like, listening to you guys, very cool. Never hesitate to tell a story. Also thank all of you for your service, it is a noble thing.

Don't leave an open door like that, Zane. Ask TD, I could bore you to suicidal thoughts.

The one that really puzzles me is the small handful of dried lily buds. Where do I find a small hand?

You can get the shrooms at an Asian market, substitute the tapioca with corn starch, and maybe get the lilly buds:roll: at the market or just skip them.

Exotic Dried Lily Flowers (buds) sometimes called "tiger lily buds" or "golden needles" (gum jum) from China. Use in many Chinese traditional dishes including "jai" a dish prepared for pre-new years celebration. Use: Soak in warm water for about 30 minutes, then rinse in fresh water. Cut off the hard stem end and then cut the buds in half. They can be used as is or broken into strands. Lily buds are often paired with black or wood ear fungus in dishes such as jai and hot and sour soup. They also can be added to stir-fries and need just a few minutes to cook. (StarBulletin.com)

I hope it is not too late to use CPR to rivive the thread. :p

Good Morning Folks.
Yeah baby...5 1/2 hours of solid sleeping. Feels great for a change. Amazing what being outside until midnight and having a few wobbly pops will do for ya. :D

I would prefer hard wood. No, a lie, I would prefer the travertine that is is in my garage patiently awaiting it's return to the store. :( But, since porcelain is also out...too much trouble for corey to install, we're going for the laminate.

You CAN use the travertine, but you have to be OK with the fact it will show wear in high traffic areas and could stain a bit. Some people actually want this. The same goes for using marble as a counter top, it will show wear and staining, but this distressed look is just fine for many people.

But, I like CSI!

I've never seen a single episode of NCIS. I should check it out sometime.

I have never seen a single episode of either of these shows. The only drama type show I have watched in recent history has been 24.

Very nice. :D

I'm going to look for these today. Goodness knows, there's no shortage of Asian markets in this area.

We had dinner with a client of ours last night, and he used to run a chain of Chinese fast food restaurants in the Bay Area. We spent a good portion of our time discussing rice. I never thought to ask him about the other things.

My folks in law turned over all their pictures to me. They were slides and in pretty bad shape. They hadn't seen them in decades. My MIL cried when she saw them all. Not the reaction I was hoping for.

Got the full set here.

Oh, that's a very long story. As the Pacific Star was sinking, the bales of pot were pouring out of a secret hold that was discovered. For a while, high grade Thai pot was floating about in the Pacific. Around a thousand pounds. We corralled them up with our small boats and their life raft and secured them all in one of the forward holds. They stayed there until we pulled into San Diego where the DEA took over.

That's the really edited version.

VERY cool stories!

I already mentioned this in RRTP, but we had dinner at an incredibly good Cantonese restuarant in San Mateo tonight. Probably the best I've had in many, many years.

Hong Kong Causeway Bay Restaurant. We ate there by default. Our regular restaurant across the street (Joy Luck Place) is being remodeled, so we went to the Hong Kong Causeway. What a happy accident. We'll probably not be going back to Joy Luck Place.

Sounds yummy!!!

2. First cutter named after an author, who was also, at one time, a cook in the Coast Guard before making it big in print.

She's intriguing to me because she was converted from the USS Edenton (ATS-1), a US Navy salvage and diving ship. The first time I saw her after the Coast Guard converted her she still had some of the distinctive superstructure (removed by the time this picture was taken) that was part of her heavy lifting gear.

This is what she looked like in Navy service...

http://upload.wikimedia.org …/Uss_edenton_09310103.jpg (external link)

If I had known that was your son's first ship, I wouldn't have bothered asking...

I just got a text from Heather telling me to stop testing you CG knowledge and go to bed... :o

Yeah.... I was on the Citrus from 1982 to 1988. In this pic, I'm on the helm.... again. If you look all the way up top, on the flying bridge, you'll see a guy standing there. That's an old friend of mine: Patrick McAndrews, aka PattyMac. We were supposed to clear the decks as the helo flew by for the photo op, but PattyMac was the lookout.... he had to be there.

There's another guy on the starboard bridge wing working the azimuth. I think that's QM2 Anjain working on a nav fix.

The distinctive A-frame was a part of the old Buoy Tender equipment and really served no purpose. It was later removed in the yards during a pretty extensive refit.

How cool!!!

I was hoping to find a copy of our standard press release photo online. It was taken during a hurricane north of Scapa Flow. The shot is from dead head on...and features a wave breaking over the flight deck.

Holy HOCK!!!!

puddlepirate44 wrote in post #8711633 (external link)
Biggest surf I ever saw was 50 off of Oregon. Sustained winds at 70 kts with gusts up over 100. I guess that doesn't sound like much, but we were a pretty small boat at 180'. We were out there in case there was any SAR that came up. Like we'd be able to do anything if there were.

Nice record! I only puked once.... all over my boss...

We sailed on our cruise ship through some rough seas spawned from the year of non-stop September hurricanes in the Atlantic... Francis, then Ivan and Jeanne on the eastern side of the Bahamas while we were on the Western side... I kept a journal on our trip. We only had 20 ft seas... my now ex succumbed to the seas and got sick... me I was fine.... The biggest seas we had were 20 ft... Obviously I realize that cruise ships are designed differently but the boat was rocking pretty good...

puddlepirate44 wrote in post #8711682 (external link)
It took a long time for me to break the habit of hooking my arm around my dish, holding my glass of whatever and being ready to tip my plate/cup/whatever to counteract the roll of the ship like a human gimbal. My table manners were never good to start with, but six years on a cutter didn't help matters at all. :o

hehehehehe

neil_r wrote in post #8711771 (external link)
Eating was a waste of time, It would have been better for me to just tip the plate down the heads and cut out the middle man :-(

Poor Neil!!! That's no fun!

puddlepirate44 wrote in post #8711782 (external link)
I remember once, in rough seas, watching a huge jar of peanut butter break loose from the rubber matting that we had on the mess deck tables, roll across the table, launch off the aforementioned "lip" of the table and crash on the deck. We were all hanging on to our plates and cups during the roll, so no one could stop it's trajectory. When it was all over, we had about 64 oz. of a brown amoeba on deck.

Peanut butter is really hard to get off of the deck, btw.

Bwahahahahahahaha I think my dad has a similar story... ya'd think that someone along the way would learn... hehehehe My dad was in the Navy.
