You won't ever regret buying the 70-200 2.8 IS. Besides the 24-70, that lens is always in my bag and I've used it more times than I think I need to. It is so versatile and absolutely beautiful. You could not get anything better, IMO for that price. I only bought the 100-400 for outdoor sports, but indoors, the 70-200 is what I use.

Looks great.
After the dust settles, if I can muster the $$, this is on my list as my new 2nd body.
I've been waiting for a mid range with Video,. this baby has a whole lot more to offer than a 50D with Video!!!!

It really sounds like a D300 in the sense that you get all the Pro features and performance in an affordable crop body.

Crop and Pixel Density Vs. Noise:
As for ISO and noise,. for some of us, 18MP on a crop sensor is a godsend.
I expect most of you are correct that this may not be Canon's best high ISO low light performer.
But not every camera can be that, nor should they all be. In some cases it would be nice to go the other way, and this body is doing that.
I have my 1D III for indoor low light shooting. If this sensor is able to get good shots @ ISO 400-800 in broad daylight, then it's the perfect affordable birding and wildlife body!

Right now I get 10MP on a 1.3x crop,.. I'm stoked at the idea of 18MP on a 1.6x!!! If the detail can be captured with a good lens,. that will be some amazing "crop-ability"

Here is the 7D compared with the 5DMK2 at ISO6400, with normal noise reduction. It is apparent that the 5DMK2 is cleaner than the 7D. I would rate them 5DMK2 better than 7D better than 50D. Considering that the 50D initial price was $1400, the $1700 price of the 7D is quite reasonable given its many new features (it means that by the end of the year it will go down to around $1400).

That's the part I am looking forward to, the 8fps and the 18mp on the 1.6x body. My sports shooting can really go nuts! The D300 is a great camera, though. Can't get too mad at N*kon for kicking Canon's butt lately.

Site says end of the month, but I doubt they will be in stores until October.

No guarantee on that. Price is set by demand and global economy. The 5dMkii, if anything, has gone up in price since it came up.

What are we looking at for batteries in this thing?
Same as the 50D? 5D2?

Same as 5D2. It's a good, long-lasting battery FWIW.

The part I am most excited about is that I never print an image larger then 2100 pixels for my business! You downsize those 6400 ISO images and they should look like 1600 to 2000 ISO ..

This is for sure on my buy list, and with video...I love the button layout on the back!

It's interesting. We're seeing the noise comparisons on prototypes, and there's nothing shocking. It's not as good as the 5dmkii, but better than the 50d. The more interesting question is how does it compare to the d300s.

Amazon had the 5D2 battery for under $67 today. I paid $89 for mine. So the price of that battery is going down slowly, but I have 3 already. One charge can go to 800 images or so for me.

The now built-in speedlite transmitter brought a tear to my eye.

I can now either have an extra 580EX flash, or sell off a 580EX ii... lol

You can see that the NR really knocks down the detail - but it's good to remember that this is ISO 6400. I'm thinking that this is a heck of a performance for such a densely-packed sensor.
