^- Hmn i played with the ISO3200 RAW file, Looks better than my 30D at 1600...

but its really hard to tell because im comparing -real- pictures to a test picture under conditions i doubt i can easily replicate...

Oh! and on the computer thing, yes it does tax my computer a little more than my 30D files, But nothing dramatically bad :)

I think you'll find that those sample pictures are Jpegs, not RAW files. So i'm sure there's some improvements to be made over those images.

I posted this to another 7D thread, but I guess it's ok to post it here too. Many might be interested in this anyway.

I went to Imaging-resource and compared 7D RAW images with 450D RAW through the lastest ACR version, sandwiching the two files on top of each other with the 7D image resized with bicubic sharper to match 450D image's size. The difference was disturbingly small at higher ISO's like ISO 1600. 450D's noise performance is better than 50D's at ISO 800-1600, so that the noise is more even and the image looks more clean in general. I found it more fair to compare 7D to 450D than 50D. And trust me, no one is more surprised than I am. Everything else seems great in the 7D, but I'm starting to have second thoughts in regards to image quality and whether there's any significant improvent on cameras like 450D and 30D.

go and see for yourself if you like

450D:

I know that the 7D RAW support is not final in ACR or Lightroom, but having looked at and compared 450D, 50D and 7D images (and seeing the very close resemblance in noise quality and detail retention), I'm not expecting any miracles in the next ACR update. The quality might be (unfortunately) quite final.

So I imported 20 CR2 files to Lightroom, did a lot of sandwich comparing in Photoshop but just didn't realize they were JPGs? :D

I remember when the 5DII demo files were out as Jpegs, every one went crazy about the poor jpegs. Once the lighting optimiser and NR is taken out, the jpegs look quite nice. The raws were available too, but at the time there was no supported raw converter. Which was why i waited for 3-4 months before I bought a 5DII.
I'm sure the 7D's raw files can be used in LR, but it's probably not a fully tuned import, so I'll take those files as a grain of salt. The initial iso (jpeg) 1600 files look promissing, far better than my current 40D files. From my initial observation, the iso 800 files look very sweet, so assuming we can extract an extra stop of goodness from the raw files, then iso 1600 may well be the 7D's sweet spot.

Rule #1 for high-performance notebooks: Go fo the fastest storage available. What makes notebooks feel slow and laggy compared to desktop machines are those awful 5400rpm hard-drives with their long access times. Always go for a 7200rpm drive (or a SSD if you can afford it, especially stuff like Intel's X25 series).
And don't go for expensive CPU upgrades - you won't notice 200mhz more or less these days.

Yup. Good, fast storage. Loads of memory. Quad-core processor. Those three will make Lightroom fly.

My laptop has a 160GB SSD for my boot disk and Lightroom Catalog files. 500GB 7200 rpm internal HDD for storage. 1.5TB e-SATA backup. 4GB RAM. And a 2.93 MHz Quad-core CPU (and LR really does make full use of it).

Lightroom, with an 18,000 image catalog opens in 6 seconds - including the time to do a verify and backup!!!!

Ungh, I need a new computer. I am using a 6 year old PC. Still runs fine, but it's slow compared to what's out there now.

Going to get a core i7 laptop soon.

What's the word on the street about the Dynamic Range of the 7D?

I think it's an excellent camera for the price, but I don't care for the 7D at all. Underwhelming specs + loss of wide aperture wide angles == something that I don't care about. Unless we get some sort of 11-22 2.8 or better, that is.

its an 11-16, but this man is correct ;)

Unless of course you need say, a 24 f/1.4 or something, then yes you're SOL, but for people who need such a thing thats what the 5D is for
