actually auto iso is that way in the mark II and Mark III and 50D....I believe that is a brand new feature where it would actually float above ISO 400

So, what you're saying is that ISO should be between 100-6400 (or 12800) on auto? If so, saweet.

im looking to get the 7d. someone posted a link to the (i beileve) cheapest price through bing and some reputable retailer (not tigerdirect).

can someone please post this link again?

OR

can someone tell me what the cheapest link would be for this or the kit lens version, with any kind of discounts, promos, bank card rebates or the like?

i would like to preorder it now, but would like to save some money if possible.

thanks.

I also compared the 7D files on IR to other cameras (5d2, 40d, 450d). I don't expect many improvements for the production version but IMHO it would be okay even if it stays like it is. I didn't do any "real" testing, just compared the files and messed around with ACRs settings a bit. I also compared the JPGs but I don't really like the way Canon does noise-reduction on their Digic IV cameras (too destructive IMHO).

The 5d2 is, of course, about a stop better in terms of noise performance and also has the highest amount of detail (no surprise here). It's really great, although not "worlds apart" from the crop cameras, as it is sometimes stated. Still: If you want the best high-ISO performance, there's no way around the 5d2.

The 40d/450d/7d are about equal at pixel level. There are minor differences (it looks like the 7d has slightly more noise) but that could have been caused by the fact that the lighting wasn't consistent and the 7d shot is slightly darker overall (all shots were taken with the same exposure settings). I thought that this could be caused by the 7d having "false" ISO values but someone (I think in the forums at dpr) posted a test which showed that the camera actually works correctly, so possibly it's just that IR's studio lightbulbs need replacing. ;) Furthermore, the noise pattern of the 7d looks quite good actually: No patterns, no banding etc. and it cleans up quite well even using ACR's integrated noise reduction functions. Using ACR, the problem DPP has with red-on-red-contrasts is practically non-existant, the details of the red cloth are preserved even at ISO6400 with noise-reduction set to maximum. It's clearly a problem with DPP's noise reduction algorithm and not the camera itself.

All in all, I'm quite happy with the results. My initial thoughts about the 18mp sensor were that the 7d would possibly have more pixel-level noise and about the same amount of image-level noise compared to Canon's older models. Thankfully, this does not seem to be the case and the noise itself doesn't look bad either (no splotches, patterns etc.). If you want to, you can probably clean it up very easily using higher-end noise reduction software.

Does the 7D's recording support auto focus?
Or is it all manual focusing?

AF is possible but only contrast-based (like in LiveView) which is pretty slow compared to "real" AF and won't look good on video. For serious video shooting, MF is your only option atm.

Contrast based?
Does that mean, i could focus this camera with teleconverters on lenses that would otherwise not support regular auto focus?
Hmm. . .
Do you think any future DSLR, 5D Mk III? for e.g might support auto focus with video?

Of course you can manual focus a lens of any aperture, but obviously the smaller the aperture the darker the image for manually focusing. Obviously a lerger external LCD or something like the z-finder would help.

I think they are definitely working on a way to AF with the mirror up, perhaps a revisit of the pellicle mirror or an electronic viewfinder

I just worked on a stitched 170Megapixel image with my crappy PC. Take that, Megapixel luddites!

Also, yes the lack of pattern and banding noise is huge.

I've been doing stitching also with my XTi...amazing the IQ from 3+ images. An 11"x14" print looks like a large-format contact print.

Stitching in general has gotten me interested in printing big. I can only imagine how large these files would be with full res 7D and 5D files.

Auto ISO on the 7D covers the range 100-3200.

... Once the 7D euphoria has worn off and the price drops, I may be a buyer. :D

Well, I've heard that everytime a new camera comes out. But by the time those things happen, a new camera is announced. You'll never beat Canon!!!

Really, what's going to do it for me is the real life high ISO performance. We'll have to wait and see,.

Yes. It has an AF-On button as well as a M-Fn button in the front (by the shutter).
