anyone else preorder this lens besides me?

there is 11% off with bing.com btw. for now at least.

does anyone think canon will have this lens for a lower price (than $1049...$933.50ish at adorama after bing bling) at all in the next year via rabates or what not?

I have it preordered through Amazon. Got on that list as soon as it appeared. I'm assuming that they are shipped on a first-come-first-served basis. So I don't want to cancel my preorder and get on some other list, especially since I'm hoping to have the lens the first week of November, when I'll be leaving for a long trip abroad. However, the idea of saving more than $100 is very appealing. Ugh. What to do...

well, you can probably keep both orders and possibly return the amazon one if the adorama one comes in around the same time.

i believe amazon will give you a full refund especially within 30 days.

besides, i think adorama will have a bigger stock so being "in line" would not matter.

also, adorama does not charge until they ship, so you can cancel your order with no penalty right up until the last minute. again your card will not be charged.

yes there is a "trick" to it, but it is very real. there is a thread about it. i have to find the thread, or i will just post my personal results, i plan to buy other things to, so maybe i will do screen shots as i go along this time. just did it today, so it still works.

edit:only works in the usa, so out of luck if you are not in the usa.

would the magnification change from 1.0x to 1.6x if used on a 7d or like cameras? just wondering. oh and what is the minimum focusing distance. canon states .33 meters which is like 12 inches, but the other non L 2.8 it says you can focus as close as 5.9" and it's the same 100mm and same 1.0x mag.

huh???

I've managed to focus on something just further away than the end of the lens hood. *shrug*

1:1 magnification means the object will be the same size in RL as it would be had it been placed right on top of the sensor. It has nothing to do with sensor size. However, how large the object appears on your screen at 1:1 is dependent on pixel density so it would appear larger on the 7D image compared to that of a 5D2.

oh thanks. so i understand that it's from the film plane when canon specs for a lens say a particular minimum focusing distance? if it is i never knew that and that's great.

why shrug? is that bad that you can get closer IF you wanted to?

ok yes you are right, but in EFFECT, just like a 100mm lens will have the field of view of a 160mm lens...then in effect, by virtue of the coverage area, since it will fill the frame more at it's minimum focusing distance relative to the 5D2, let's say, then it EFFECTIVELY has a larger magnification?

does that make sense/that true?

ehh, I shrug as I find it hard to believe that my testing would disagree with Canon's stated MFD. However, as you say, I haven't measured the distance from the end of the hood to the sensor!

thanks. it actually makes sense if you add the lens length and the hood length and an inch or so to the "sensor plane" that it would be about 12 inches, which is right. thanks. wow you are the only one with this lens now.

can you please post an unprocessed straight out of the camera pic (no photoshop or anything) for review. doesn't matter what subject. all the photos i have seen are crops and sharpened or otherwise processed.

would make me feel better about purchasing the lens.
