thanks. it actually makes sense if you add the lens length and the hood length and an inch or so to the "sensor plane" that it would be about 12 inches, which is right. thanks. wow you are the only one with this lens now.

can you please post an unprocessed straight out of the camera pic (no photoshop or anything) for review. doesn't matter what subject. all the photos i have seen are crops and sharpened or otherwise processed.

would make me feel better about purchasing the lens.

Ok! One random photo coming up!

Resized for web only :)

cropped for web?! croppola!

kidding you. but ya, can you post a full res raw or even jpeg of anything, i really want to see the quality of the thing without processing and trickery.

already ordered it, but i cannot wait! :)

you can use imageshack dot us or some such other host for the image.

pretty please. you are the only one with the lens so far.

have you taken any shots to check for front/backfocusing in for the microadjust, if so...do tell:)

lol! not cropped, just resized (re-scaled)! I'm on a free Flickr account so I can't really post a straight from 5DII jpeg without resizing/compression! If you haven't already had a goosey @ my flickr (external link), there are some 1:1 crops with no PP on there.

TBH, I haven't bothered to check for front/back focus as it's been spot on - I've pixel-peeped and haven't noticed any OOF :)

eth3rton has just had one delivered, so look out for some photos from him too! (check https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=752944 as I don't know exactly where he'll post)

I canceled my pre-order for the 100mm f/2.8L IS. I don't feel the IS is worth double the money. I shoot on tripod for my macro shots so I don't think IS is necessary. Not only that but my 100mm f/2.8 macro lens is very very sharp. If I didn't have a 100mm macro lens I would love to have this lens, just can't see spending over $1,000.00 for another lens the same size.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

That's the right choice. If you shoot macro on a tripod, there is no point. The difference in IQ between the two will be limited, if they exist at all.

I'm buying for the IS, since I shoot more macros/closeups handheld than mounted. And, I'm hoping for light non-macro use if the AF is fast enough. I have no delusions about it being sharper than my current non-L version.

I'm also buying it for the IS, but not for when I shoot macro. I prefer to shoot macro on a tripod. My use for IS on this lens will be general telephoto shooting where using a tripod is forbidden or impractical. I do a lot of handheld low-light shooting (of stationary subjects) in these sorts of situations. The IS will be a huge boon for me.

why don't you get this and SELL your current 2.8?? so you are not spending $1000.

Exactly my approach. I'm selling my 100/2 and 60/2.8 macro and getting the new 100L to replace them both.

Because he doesn't need the IS and sees no benefit of spending more money for a feature he won't use.

I'd do the same if I could but since IS will be very, VERY beneficial for what I use the 100 macro for, I felt it prudent to order the lens.

I'm a dentist.

Setting up a tripod on top of the patient's chest is not an option. So whatever will allow me to close down the aperture for slightly greater DoF and get me sharper images will help.
