I've owned both and have to say the color and contrast is very close but there is a slight edge on the new L version which seems to require less use of my vibrancy controls in CS4 to bring out the color pop I'm after. That alone wouldn't be enough of a reason to upgrade so its a good thing that the now included IS, nicer bokeh and weather sealing does. Having not to buy the hood separately also doesn't hurt.

I think Canon has a winner here.

Cheers!

ah thanks for your input on this,
it's one of those lens that i don't normally use (or use enough), that's my biggest concern about buying the 100/2.8L , (compared to when I had the 100/2.8)

maybe I just need another camera body =p

thanks

Anybody with a 50D have this lens? On mine it takes much longer to autofocus than in the previously posted video(that used a 5D). If I start from infinity with the lens cap on, it takes 4 seconds with the shutter button held half-way down to go through the full range and back to infinity. If I limit the range from .5m to infinity it takes a little over 2 seconds. Anybody else experience this with a 50D here? I'm just wondering if its normal now...

Was there sufficient lighting? I find AF slower in more challenging lighting conditions.

The lens cap was on so that it wouldn't find anything to focus on...same thing with shooting with it off at a solid color wall. Focus speeds up if I shoot something it can find. I just don't understand the difference between the video posted and my test.

Here is the video I am referring to. I'd say this is about double the speed mine operates at when the lens cap is on.

Ok apparently I'm an idiot. I pointed it at a light source(my monitor) showing a white screen and the autofocus doesn't lock on as there is no detail but it is MUCH faster. Thanks for pointing this out for me...puts my worries to rest!

wouldn't putting the cap on be a challenging lighting situation?

how is pointing it at a monitor w/cap (i am guessing) make it better..does light leak through?

If I didn't know any better, I would say that you do product photography for ads. This one certainly looks like it could be one!

Edit: Just saw your website. Pretty good stuff in there!

Thank you for the kind words. I like your work on flickr as well.

In a true challenge between the cap and the light, I believe the cap would win.

Cheers!

so did that video of focusing involve a cap on the lens? if so, then the reported above doesn't make sense.

Thanks for sharing that video. It was interesting to see how fast the 135 lens was at hunting for focus. And although the 100 was not as fast, it was obviously much quieter.

I can't wait to get this lens. Just gotta wait a little longer, since my savings already took a hit with the 7D!

I haven't had much time to play with it. This photo is from my first set of photos with the lens. I'll have more time to test it this weekend (and at that point with a 7D). Yes, the IS is mostly very quiet, unless you have the shutter button half-pressed and move it around, at which point it makes a mild, high-pitched sound that is unlike anything I've heard come out of any other IS lens I've used, including the 17-50. It's still too early for me to comment on the lens otherwise, so I'll just leave it at that.

Obviously, I took the cap off. I had asssumed this test was run in the video was run with cap on so the lens could not lock focus. However, I found the original link that was posted to the video and he explained the exposure settings he had at the time. I mimicked these and then everything was a-ok.

A single small flashlight, but I was moving it around during the exposure.
