Why couldn't canon make this lens a EF-S L instead of the plastic with metal screws. about time they did isn't it? would have been perfect. From what I've seen I like the lens but still feels and looks plastic with glass. was playing with it again today and like it but as i have said before trying to test it in a shop is no bloody good at all.

Kenji when you buy it mate, please post some out and about shots ;)

Plastic? Really? And yet Kenji mentioned that the build is better than that of the 17-55, which is quite sturdy. If you want plastic with glass, check out the 50mm 1.8 lens. That is plastic with glass. I highly doubt the 15-85 feels anything like that. Also, EF-S lenses will never get the L monicker, even if one is exactly of L-quality.

At 50mm and 85mm the framing is identical and 15-85 is sharper.

The very reason for the existense of this lens is the wideangle use, so the 50-85mm performance is off less importance. I won't buy a lens like this just because it's a good performer in the tele-end.

Exactly. The 17-85 is pretty sharp already at the long end as it is. My hope for this lens is that it will be much better at the wide end which is the biggest weakness of the 17-85.

No it doesnt, the 15-85 feels solid, it feels a little better than my Sigma 10-20 EX in fact..which isnt exactly a cheaply built lens!

now anyways, Try number 2 at getting this thing, Supposedly all my Best Buys now have it...I have 3 local Best Buys..

Went to a local electronics store, Very cool place, They have a new concierge system that -ensures- you get help [Their staff are non-pushy mind you]

They have the 15-85 in their warehouse, and its being shipped over to the showroom tomarrow

The best part? Their price is $749.99 :) Ok, not as good as Best Buy with the 12% off, but im not dealing with Schrodinger's inventory system and the store manager shrugging and telling me that "Well then i guess the inventory thing online doesn't work" as well as 50 people telling me its discontinued...

So i might pick it up tomarrow..i dont know i'm having a hell of a time just pulling the trigger on it for some reason

If you live in Buffalo, just cross into Ontario (Toronto if you want competitive prices, or Niagara Falls if you want proximity) to get it.

Canon Canada is wholely owned by Canon USA, so the warranty cards are honored no matter which side of the border you bought it in -- why do you think so many Canadian Canon shooters buy from B&H and Adorama?

Today I was at Henry's and Downtown Camera, the two major retailers on Queen St. E. in downtown Toronto. Neither of them have this lens in stock. And Canon Canada priced this lens for Cdn$999.99 --if you don't buy it with the 7D. How's that for competitive? With the Canadian dollar at almost 98 cents U.S., I would think Canadians are not going to buy it on the home market.

I am fully aware of the price inequity, which was why I bought many of my lenses from B&H and Adorama. (Although to be fair, the looney was not near-parity when Canon Canada had to decide on the MRSP for the 7D and the 15-85IS.)

Anyway, if you go back and re-read the thread, you'll see that KenjiS was complaining about the 7D/15-85IS kit not being available in the United States. I was simply pointing out that such a kit can be bought from Ontario especially since he lives in Buffalo.

Finally, I am painfully aware that the 15-85IS is not available in Canada yet. I pre-ordered the 7D/15-85IS kit from Aden (which was one of the earliest Canadian vendors to have the 7D -- and the 7D/18-125 kit -- in stock), and they haven't received the 15-85IS kits yet either.

But if you are not looking for the kit, and you don't like the Canadian price for the lens alone, why don't you order the 18-85IS from the US? B&H is accepting preorders, and I'm sure you can find some US vendors shipping it already....

Speaking as someone who used to shoot with the Nikon F (the predecessor to the F4 and F5) and several fully-metal Nikkors, I'll take high-quality plastic over metal lenses any day of the week.

When was the last time you saw/heard/read about a "plastic" lens break from normal use?

Often enough on these forums and in fact had one myself that broke. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not a person to write off a lens because its not made out of cast iron and could be used as an axle stand. I'm happy as long as the build matches along with the price, and for me plastic does not automatically equal a flimsy lens.
I've worked with plastics that will easily beat many metal lenses in terms of taking abuse.

Actually I am still weighing my options, one of which is status quo -- not buying the lens. I am not placing the order with B&H because they don't have it in stock. They don't charge me until the item is in stock and ready to ship. Who knows what the loonie will be at when the lens is ready to ship?

Go ahead and do it....you won't be sorry. I Picked one up a couple days ago at Best Buy. The quality of this lens is superb! MUCH better than the 17-85! Be forewarned however that the Canon Lens hood, EW-78E, is not available anywhere at this time.

Has anyone tried one of the other Canon "EW-78" hoods on the 15-85 in the mean time? It would probably vignette at 15mm, but it might be handy until the new EW-78E is available.
