The top one is definitely sharper across the image. Although it is of course possible that is just a focus issue. Which image came from which lens?

Oh, and on a completely different subject, try finding Loratidin. It's the generic version of Claritin and way way cheaper. :)

The top one is from the 15-85. I did this test over a couple of days, made sure focus was not an issue. I thought you might have figured out which is which from the barrel distortion. And thanks for the tip, I'll look for it next time at the pharmacy.

Couple of crops from me for record in case any of you were interested. This shot is stopped down quite a bit, but it's almost at full reach. I don't know if it's any value to you guys, but it's convinced me that I've got a sharp copy.

In my opinion, this is one sharp, sharp lens. Especially in good light stopped down, but even wide open my experience has been amazing for sharpness, color and contrast. Some CA that I could have processed out, but even that isn't too bad.

If you must know...

Looks sharp to me too. Not just the Stop sign, but the grass below it at the lens border. I laughed when I saw those bullet holes

BTW, there's a version 1.1.0 firmware for your 7D which fixes the ghosting issue.

I've read the lens extends when zooming, will this affect any screwin filters?

No, the lens extends but the front element does not rotate upon focus or zoom.

Sorry to bug ya. Does the EW-78BII get in the way of any shots between 15 and 18 (i.e. vignetting)?

No, the EW-78B II works well. I couldn't see any vignetting. I don't know why they bothered making an EW-78E.

They made it because the materials are much higher quality on the 78E, to match the finish on the body. No longer is it the "InstaScratch" material of yesteryear. It is the nicest hood I own, not that it really matters.

A few more from with the 7d and 15-85 combo.

Allow me to add.. the EW-78C (from 35L) will vignette on this lens.

Excellent shots Yamaha451! Sooo sharp! If you didn't tell anyone, I think most will think these came from the 17-55.

Thanks but they wouldn't look as good if they came from a 17-55! :p

I see that the price on this lens is slowly coming down. Abe's of Maine has it for a little over $750 now, as does Amazon. It isn't much, but hopefully it will drop below $700 in a little time.

Great shots Yamaha451!

I've got to take more B&W shots! Those are done with the Monochrome setting, right?
