Since its a better built than the 17-55 f/2.8, do you guys think there would be dust issues and broken IS with this lens? Also, how would this lens perform with the built in camera flash, any flair below the pics?

15-85 and 430EX II = better buy than 17-55 alone?

I so far have not had any dust issues with it, the IS unit is a tough call to be honest with you..but the new 4th gen units have been impeccable lately

I'd say a 15-85 and a 430 is a more versatile combo, the 17-55 to me is a specialist sort of zoom...

But thats me

I've been using the 15-85 and the 430EX II one company party and one awards show. Plus a couple of fashion shows without flash. I'll put up some samples soon. I'll be playing happy snapper at a wedding on Friday, will see how the combo works there too. But loving it so far :)

Same place, different time :). At 15mm:

Very nice. Do you have any EXIF data on this? And what did the AF focus on?

^ f/3.5, 1/20s, 15mm, 400 ISO

I believe it was a centre focus point on the closest bird, AE lock, and then recompose.

Ok I did some things just a bit ago..in darkness...Handheld

I'm shocked my ISO800 ended up cleaner than i thought...

No, they're not the sharpest in the world..First one was through the windshield of a car:

KenjiS nice shots and I do think that the 15-85 can be used for low light,
here is my mistake I sent my 15-85 back and got the tamron 17-50 VC that was a no no, the 15-85 is superior and Monday I am sending back the Tamron and getting my 15-85 back which the shop owner agreed thank god;)
note on your shot at 85mm f/5.6 1/4sec even if you had a 2.8 lens you probably would of been at 1/10th sec big deal, this is where the sigma 30 1.4 would do it's magic;)

Can anybody please let me know when to slap on a hood and when not to on this lens, for example how can one position the lens ie, angle and such when dealing issues like flaring, which focal ranges might end up having probs like vignetting when the hood is used or let me know if there is any other general reading material available.

Many thanks

ALWAYS use a hood. Day or night, indoors or outdoors. The hood will never vignette.

I can only think of two possible reasons to remove the hood:

1) If you are using the in-camera flash at very wide angles the hood will cast a shadow

2) If you are using a polarizing filter, the hood makes it difficult to turn the filter
