You may have noted the innovative features on this camera. Does this show us the future of Canon camera's and is it a good one.

This is what I see.
1. Power switch moved. Oh thank you Canon, I hate it down at the bottom.
2. Quiet mode with a single button. nice for wedding togs
3. Delete button that you can feel. hope two clicks delete
4. Start recording movies without dial turning
5. A button to switch jpg/raw. Nice
6. Finally a white focus assist led.
7. Deeper handle. I have big hands.
8. Battery grip that has wireless. It even looks good.
9. iFCL new metering system. Only time will tell. Maybe canon has some improvements for lighting situations that fool the current system.
10. finally remote flash to compete with CLS.

I believe this is more innovative than the 5DMII was. It seems that canon was willing to change. Sometimes small changes can be big to the user. Subtle changes can be the best.

I wonder, is this the end of the XXD series? In other words is the 7D the replacement for the 50D or will there be a 60D, possibly with most of the features of the 7D but without video?

Why would the 1DIV be full frame? the 1D has always been the fast 1.3 drop body with the 1Ds being the full frame beast.

40D gripped - Tamron 17-50 f2.8 - Sigma 30 1.4 - Canon 430EX - AB800 - various other little things like shutter releases...

the 1Ds has always been the high MP body with half the MP. 1.3 was a stopgap (canon's said as much) because at the time the 1D was released FF was still too expensive. Stick to the 2x 1/2 formula and you'll still have the same relationship between the 1 series bodies. Sensor size doesn't matter and FF would make it have even less noise. Less noise would mean anyone crying about "reach" could slap on a 1.4 TC and go one stop higher with their ISO and be just as happy as they are now.

if canon really backed 1.3, where's a 16-35mm replacement for those guys? The only option is the 12-24mm from sigma if you're serious about your wides and shoot the 1 series.

Probably not. It was stated in one of the reviews that the 7D comes in just under the 5D2 and above the 50D, so it looks like the Rebels go up against the Dx000 series, the x0D goes up against the Dx0 series, and the 7D goes up against the D300 which would make sense, Canon has multiple upgrade options and a similar lineup to compete with all that the other company offers. Good strategy by Canon :D

If there is no xxD - big gap between the rebel to 7D.

easy to slide a 60D in around 1250-ish between $1000 and $1700.

yep, add video and improve the noise a bit with digic V and it'd be a much better camera than the 50D and offer most people what they NEED. The 7D fills in a lot of people's WANTS though.

I would cry.. I like that my 1D is 1.3 cause it adds a little more focal length to my lenses for sports while my wide angle lenses are still wide enough.

5. A button to switch jpg/raw. Nice

How is this "nice"? Seriously, I didn't know there was any need for such a button. Either you care about PP and printing, in which case you shoot RAW, or you just want to keep it simple and shoot jpg. Is there any hybrid user group that switch so often that is justifies its own button? (The only thing I can think of right now would be the benefit with the larger buffer for jpg's during rapid sport photography for example, but since I'm not a sports photographer I don't really know if "they" switch between jpg and raw on a daily basis.)

But the centrum part of a ff sensor has exactly the same reach as the 1D sensor. It is just a question of how many - and how noise-free - these pixels are...

To me, 7D is squarely aim at Nikon D300s. xxDs were never really up to the spec of D300, not about IQ, just feature set. Now just like what Nikon did in low end, Canon is finally producing a flagship 1.6x body matching the competition.

The 50D came out a short time ago why the rush for a 60D? Remember how people got bent out of shape when the 50D came out a short time after the 40D did? People got mad when the 50D came out so quick after the 40D and now people are getting mad that a 60D is not released already?

The 7D don't seam to be a replacement for the XXD line of cameras, but more of a stand alone line
