All the bells and whistles aside (eg: Video/weather sealing/ high ISO performance)

What camera would you rather have for FF/ 100-400 ISO performance, functionality and speed?

I have not used a 1dsII and am curious how the IQ stands up to current bodies in the 100-400 ISO range.

I shoot low light and sports with a 1DIII so I don't really care about ISO800+ on a new body.

I want a FF cam and a used 1DsII is cheaper than a new 5DII...

I'll take the 5d2 anyday because the focus accuracy and speed is not an issue for me on the 5d2, but the 5d2 yields much better iso performance and image quality.

In your case 5D2 because it will also be your portable body for trips, and it is more versatile.

Completely different camera, in my opinion... and that opinion is biased since I'm a fan of the 5D2.

But, since you mentioned sports more than anything else, I think the 1Ds II might be more up your alley?

With a budget of $2500 to upgrade my old 5D Classic body, I recently had the same decision to make. I chose the 1Ds Mark II because of the weather sealing, AF performance, resale value, and reputation to be a solid camera. I do not regret my decision. I also use very high end film and video cameras (from Varicams to the Red One) and appreciate solid professionally built cameras. The 1D fits in that category. The 5D-series, while very nice with excellent IQ, simply is not a professionally built camera.

"but the 5d2 yields much better iso performance and image quality."

And how exactly did you arrive at that conclusion???? I owned & sold a 5D2 because I couldn't see any IQ difference & frankly prefer my 1Ds2. My test samples from both can be viewed or downloaded here.

Can't make a bad choice. IMO it boils down to the ergonomics and intended use. Both yield excellent IQ in the 100-400 range. MA feature might be something to really think about, I like it. Good luck.

I just went back to a 5d from being away for awhile and I really dont like the "feel" of it. I dont like the viewfinder. and i dont like the AF point distribution. What I do like is the small size. I dont need the weather seal but I like the robustness of the 1ds. there are probably just as many pros and cons in selecting one or the other. outer points on my ds is great - I have not tested it enough on the 5d maybe its because before i was focus / recompose. if so why was that.... prob because they dont cut it... but like i said I dont know I have almost only L glass nowadays - which i didnt on th 5d before.

I prefer the 1ds2. That's where my vote goes. Maybe you should add a poll to this thread :)
I had a 5d2 and sold it to buy another 1ds2.

I think it is fair to add that I just purchased a Splash water housing (upgraded from my earlier housing) to accommodate any 1D series camera. I will use the 1DIII in it for channel shots (tele/ 85mm+ and such)

But want to get a FF so I can use Canon 15mm instead of Tokina 10-17mm.
