Welcome to the forum gunther :) You might like to have a read of this thread, it has lots of useful info. Pay particular attention to the 70-200 F4L at around $550, the 100-300, and the Sigma APO 70-300.

Check out previous threads. In short, the 100-300mm USM if you're on a tight budget, a 70-200mm f4 L with 1.4x TC if you can strecth your budget. Ignore all 75-300mm's including the IS one.

On value/performance:

1. Sigma 70-300 APO Super II Macro (not really Macro, but decent for the cash)
2. Canon 100-300 USM
3. erm ... that's it!

What you need to consider is what you want the lens for primarily. You may need less than 300mm, in which case the Canon 70-200 F4 may be a good SH buy if you have good light ... same applies to the above 2 lenses as well. For indoors, none of them will be great without a flash. For wildlife rather than zoo and garden life they're all too short.

The 70-200mm f4 L gives you 200mm at f4, faster than any of the x-300mm at 200mm. The 70-200mm f4 L plus 1.4x TC gives you 280mm at f5.6 maximum, the same speed, but much better quality than any of the 300mm end at f5.6 maximum of all the x-300mm lenses.
