Does it make sense to periodically send in your Canon L lens for cleaning and calibration?

All of my L lens were purchased used and I am not sure if any of them had ever been serviced.

Canon 1D MK IV, Canon 1D MK III, Canon 5D, 24-70 2.8L, 70-200 2.8 L IS MK II, 17-40 F4 Canon, 430 EX, Canon A2E, 530EX Canon 1.4 Extender, 580 II, 600EX-RT, ST-E3-RT, (Way too much stuff for an amateur)

If you don't see any specks of dust or if you think you have a sharp copy then there's no need to send it in for service.

The I send in my 400 2.8is in every year before football season starts, this is my work horse so I want to make sure it is functioning properly. My other lenses I send in only if I start noticing my images are off.

I tend to send a lens in for calibration when it is off. On the other hand, I send my bodies in more frequently for cleaning and calibration.

Out of curiousity - how much does the cleaning and calibration cost?

if it's under warranty, most of the time it's free. if not...it's between $100-150. that's how much i paid.

I'd probably only send it in if there's aren't looking or feeling right.

My opinion is that I would NOT send anything in to a shop for work unless I determined that something is not working properly.

I do all my own routine cleaning (purely external for lenses, but I do my own sensor cleaning for my 20D) and the equipment seldom, if ever, needs anything else.

I have taken my old Nikon F cameras in for a CLA (clean/lubricate/adjust) after 20 or so years of use, and the shutters in my old Mamiya C33 lenses finally need such service if I wanted to use them again. All of these cameras and lenses were purchased in 1967 or so.
