lol .. is all good you been more than informative ....

I have so many ideas is crazy ....

Anyways, I just wanted to understand what you guys where saying ... that when it comes to gel if I have it in a traditional way its just going to render brightness not saturation .. so my question was for it to be saturated if I jsut needed to have the power low!

thanks anyways

I understand gelled light at different intensities and how it looks on white backgrounds or gray backgrounds or black backgrounds, as reflected light or as shoot-thru transmitted light, via expensive experimentation in the days of film...the school of hard knocks.

I have no way to know what gelled light on black hair vs. brunette hair vs. blond hair looks like in final results, at different intensities, especially in combination with some far out makeup. :( But digital is 'free'...time for you to experiment and learn from the school of cheap hard knocks! :D

I have another related stupid question. I remember that there was a time I needed to get yellow color on the black muslin. I put yellow gel on the flashes. In the first time the yellow was not rich enough and it looked greenish. But the flashes were set at full power already (and they were in manual mode). So, without much thought, I decreased the shutter speed as in the case of ambient light and it seemed that I can get a more yellowish and brighter background. This experience seems incompatible with Robert's claim, which actually I understand and believe. So, I'm a bit confused now. :o

As I read it, Robert is talking about how you can test the ambient contribution. If you shoot two shots one at 1/60 and another at 1/250 and the background doesn't change, then its not ambient contribution but rather spill. I'm not sure how you changing your shutter speed would change the output and color of your gelled flash, unless perhaps it allowed some ambient tungsten light to creep in and warm the background. Edit (Sorry, didnt realize there were multiple pages to this thread when I tried to answer a question that had already been answered)..

If her hair is REALLY RED, gel an orangey-red snooted strobe, and light the hair with that. Not that I've tried, but it seems logical!
