Last Wednesday I delivered a healthy 8lb baby boy - Carson Andrew! I waited too long to do my daughters newborn pics, so I made it my goal to do it before he was 1 week this time around.

Our session was cut short by an explosion which required prop washing so we'll try again tomorrow. These didn't come out quite like I had hoped, but it's a start anyway.

and in B&W

P.S. These were processed on my uncalibrated laptop, so if they need adjusting, let me know! :)

Congrats, he's gorgeous!! And I think you've done a wonderful job!! Your lighting and pp look spot on! I know all about explosions! lol You will eventually get enough props and stuff to just throw them in a trash bag and keep going :) 'cause they happen every time! I love the 4th one, I just love the look of baby skin against black, so precious. So what about them isn't quite what you wanted?

They seemed a bit flat to me (the ones showing more of the black background), and wasn't sure if I liked the floating baby look, but it's growing on me. The closeups I like! I was just hoping for a bit more depth.

Going to try some other angles to and different backgrounds to see if I cant get more of what I was looking for.

Thanks for the C&C!

The 2nd one is just awesome and it really draws you towards it. I am still a learner....and was wondering how did you get complete black background in your 4th pic? Is it done after the fact? or on the photo itself using stobes?

I just had him laying on a piece of black velour type material near a window (camera right), with a reflector camera left. After I made adjustments in PS, it was mostly black with a few highlights where the wrinkles in the cloth were so I took a paintbrush and went over those to make it completely black.
