Have you set your camera to AI Focus? I've noticed that if it's windy and I try to shoot flowers the lens hunt more for focus than if it's no wind at all.

Also, if it's soft to the point that it's annoyingly soft, have it calibrated. It'll do wonders (I'm having mine fixed this summer due to AF front focus in the wide angles.
