Decoding Date Codes - How is it done?

I've seen reference to 'Date Codes' on various posts relating to the production dates of various lenses.

Is there a site which translates these into a comprehensible form for a noob like myself, or does it just take some basic math based on the realease date of the lens type in question? :confused:
