I wonder how'll it'll compare to the 70-200 f/2.8 L.

Probably about the same as the present Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 does, which is pretty good.

wow that is a pretty pathetic "release", they change the coating and it is marketed as a completely new lens? I would've been interested in an APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG / HSM / OS lens :) Why have Sigma only put OS on the 80-400?

Tom.

Sounds quite interesting. Internet shops already have it listed here too. But no one has it on stock yet. :o

There are two letters missing that i prefer.... IS!

I´ll go for the Canon 70-200 L IS sooner or later :) .

There speaks a confirmed cynic, just like me

It's got a way to go to catch up with the "Tamron SP AF28-75MM F/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Macro" though ;)

Why don't the lens makers use fashionable Ab Fab names? LOL. for example "Tamron Paris Hilton 500mm"

does this lens not have more flare and CA reducing coatings and elements specifically for smaller digital sensors?

Perhaps its more than just a coating, it may actually give meaningfully better performance. I was looking at this as well as I'll never be able to afford L glass.

I think it will be a good six months before there are enough reviews to make an informed choice, I'm too much of a newbie to really test a lens on my own... But my next lens is going to be a tele.

me very curiouse.
OM

Well if it's any comfort, this was a damn good lens before they stuck the "DG" badge on it and it's doubtful that they've made it any worse.... particularly as I suspect they've done nothing

At $1000 the 80-400 OS lens is something to consider...since the Canon 100-400L goes for $1400...

I bought mine from a local camera shop yesterday; it was $40 more than the NY discounter's are selling the previous version. Whether the DG letters are worth $20 each is hard to say, especially since there are no details on what "optimized for digital" really means, but the few shots I did today (ended up pouring rain here all day and the 70-200 is a bit much for indoor shooting, though I tried a few things) aren't a really good test of the lens.

If the weather clears up I'll go outside and see what I can come up with ;)
