Another problem with Tamron.

Amongst all this talk about focus testing, I did a test with my lenses. My Tamron seems to front focus by about 4mm at 75mm and by 25mm at 28mm on the 10D. It about 2mm/6mm off respectively on my MKII. All my other lenses are fine.

Is this curable? is it the lens? or the cameras?

ah - so you decided to join the front focus bandwagon... I will be doing the formal test tomorrow as well. Just when 10d users figured out how to live with the back focus thing - a new twist. My lens does not do it consistantely so I am looking forward to see that "formal" testing will come up with.

I'm sorry in advance for my reply. Stop measurebating and start picture taking. I have noticed a true distaste for the Tamron Lens in your threads and replies. If you are unsuccessful sell the lens and get someting that matches your style. I have been reading the posts since you received your first copy of the Tamron 28-75 and you have yet to have success with this lens. That is why there are so many different variations of lenses and different manufacturers. There is something out there that matches your wants and needs.

I will admit that when I bought my first Tamron 28-75 lens it sat in the bag. I had a D60 and had very little success with the lens. Now I have the XT and I love the lens. Is it the camera, the lens or the operator? Obviously the camera has been upgraded. So did that correct the problem or is it something else?

Right........Well being on my third copy, I think I do have a small right to vent. I use it as my beat around lens on my 10D, ie testing shots, exposures, taking around on trips where I don't want to risk damaging my more expensive stuff. I have said the lens is worth it, but for whatever reason, it just doesn't work all the time. I don't know why my luck keeps running dry with Tamron.

I thought this one was the one. It was slightly soft wide open, but nothing I was worried about. I did suspect some focus problems, but as I don't use it much, I don't get around to seeing much of the work it can do to notice the problems. If I shoot SLR it's with the MKII and one of the L's or I'm shooting a different format all together. I will keep it, but It is obviously something that I have complained about and something that keeps coming back to be true, at least for me. Maybe Tamron hates me, I don't know.

At the end, this wasn't a post to bash the lens, just stating that I have found yet another problem and maybe getting feedback one what it might be the 10D or the Lens, because one the MKII its off, but not bad. Which BTW I'm still looking for an answer. Besides, if I have had a bad experience, don't I have the exact same right to let people know that this is what the problem is as the other guy is allowed to say it's good? Even if I sell it or break it, I will still tell people that I was more then dissatisfied with my experience, I'm not the first.

I have never singled anyone out or been a dick to anybody or put them down, sure I have been pissed off and been negative toward some equipment, but its just a piece of glass wrapped in plastic, no need to get all personal. I'm not a troublemaker so don't think thats what I'm trying to be, it's just me, I say what I feel, as long as it doesnt hurt anyone else, or at least I hope it doesn't.......

45 degree test charts cannot be trusted. The target should be flat and shot straight on, like the one here.

Are you able to manually focus better than the auto focus?

I'm on my third copy too, I had the store test ALL their stock to find me a decent lens, still no go. So in july this lens goes to Germany for calibration (it's the AF that's having problems, try MF and you'll see it'll improve a lot). Since the turnaround for the calibration is 4-8 weeks (yeah, big numbers) I can't risk to send it in before I have done my "solo" wedding shoot. I'll be using the Tamron and if I need to focus in some circumstances (in my case it's bad at 28-35 mm) I can use the parfocal method and get my shots.

I'm lucky, my first Tamron is bang on focus, and sharp too

Persian-Rice, you could try the focus test I did, not with a formal chart but done with a ruler and a lens box. Pics here.

I only use the single centre point to AF ... I found this worked reliably. May or may not be relevent.

You could also try something like the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 instead, as I guess after your experiences, real or imagined is irrelevant, you will always be a little suspicious of the Tamron.

I'm going to do those tests suggested, Thanks. Living in Canada I have already paid an extra $60 on shipping the thing back and forth to B&H, I won't spend any more money. Maybe Ill go with a nice Canon prime if things don't work out.
