I am looking for a bag/backpack for the gear I have.
Canon 50D
Canon 17-40 F/4L
Canon 70-200 F/4L IS
Canon 50 1.8 II

I may be looking at buying a battery grip and a 100-400 or the sigma bigma in the near future.

What would you guys recommend for backpack as I do some amount of hiking and would like to carry my gear around.

Thanks!
Vinay

Do you think you'll bring both your 70-200 and your next long lens on a hike? Will you need a daypack space?

If no, try the Lowepro Primus AW. I loved that bag, but sadly, sold it and got myself a bigger bag that allowed for more gear and no daypack.

If yes, you can try the Lowepro Flipside 400 AW.

Check out the bags review sticky here and cambags.com for some good ideas.

Look into the ThinkTank Rotation 360, www.rotation360.com (external link). It's the only backpack that allows you to access it without taking it off. You pay for the advantage, however.

I don't think it can fit his 70-200, can it?

There's also the Lowepro Flipside 300 or 400. I recently bought the 300 and love it - the "flip" feature is very useful. The 400 is a little bigger, and is weatherproofed. My 40D with 70-200 mounted fits nicely in the 300, with plenty of room for other equipment too.

I keep my 100-400L in the lower compartment on its side, along with a Speedlite. All I have to do to switch to this long lens or take a night shot is to rotate the lower section around. It's ideal for me.

I would say get a Lowepro Mini Trekker.

I have exactly the same lenses and they fit fine.

I have the TT rotation 360. the 70-200 will fit in the top and the bottom, but if you put it in the bottom you wouldn't be able to fit your body in there.

The 70-200 will fit in the bottom compartment with hood reversed? Are you sure?

If you like the Lowepro brand.

MiniTrekker AW
Flipside 400AW
Both have All Weather Cover
Plenty of room for all potential gear.

yeah, i'm sure. i stick my 70-200 2.8 in there (bigger than the f/4 versions) all the time.. i can take a pic if you wanna see it.

unless you mean 70-200 mounted. mounted, no. by itself, yes.

Oh, so can the rotation do this?

IMAGE: http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/1489/rotation360config.jpg

70-200 2.8L IS unmounted, hood reversed, no tripod collar
17-40L either with 17-55's hood, reversed (if on 7D) or no hood (if on 5D2) - mounted to camera (no grip)
50 1.4 with hood in position

yes, no?

EDIT: Just checked the site. It says the interior height of the beltpack only has 16.5cm, and the 70-200 is 19.7cm. How do you do it?

flipside 300 will suit your needs best. if you plan on buying more equipment in the future, consider a larger bag. I own a flipside 300 and it holds my 70-200 2.8 IS, 580 ex flash, 16-35, and an 85mm 1.8 with room for accessories in the zipper compartment. the tripod holder is a plus.

you can pick the bag up on ebay for $59 shipped. the only issue is that the 70-200 must be attached to your camera for storage. which means that you will reach more for your telephoto more often than your wide angle.

You should look at the Kata kt hb-205, I have the big brother the kt hb-207 with the laptop pocket but the padding for your gear is second to none and its very compfy for those long hikes. It will be bigger than you need now but if you get a long lens this will still work. After using this bag you couldn't give me a Lowepro bag, the build quality on the Kata is way better than any Lowepro bag I've owned, you should look at Kata products and no I don't work for Kata.
