Thanks guys. Interesting discussion. I thought about this when I started using RAW and Lightroom (it kinda happened at the same time). The notion that CR2 will some day be unreadable is, in my opinion, nonsense with a not-so-subtle hint of Adobe propaganda. If Canon ever abandon CR2, the old files will still be able to be converted to DNG (or any other current format).

That said, for me it makes more sense converting to DNG and backing up those files. I like the fact that everything is written into one file and not having to deal with XMP and the fact that my (to date) 30.000 files become 60.000, but most of all I like the fact that the files become 10% smaller with DNG.

I lose out on being able to use DPP but so far Lightroom have done a better job for me so it's not a problem (so far). If DPP suddenly becomes leaps and bounds better I'm sure there's a way of converting the files back to CR2 (?). Anyway, backing up 2 sets of files is a little too inconvenient for me. I already back up my DNG files to 3 different sets of disks (whereof one is remote (in case of fire)). I use a free program called SyncToy for this, which works very well for me.

Interesting discussion, thanks a lot for your input guys!

No, there isn't.
(Unless you embed the original CR2 into the DNG, which IMHO, makes no sense whatsoever.)
