I did a lens test on my 24-70 and my 70-200, didnt come out quite the way i wanted because you cant read the scale to the side very well. The camera was on tripod, mirror lockup, at Canon recommended distance for 70mm, (3.5 meters), and to me the cards are not as sharp as they should be. What do you think?

what is the mirror lockup!!!!!!!!!

you can lock your mirror up so that when you hit the shutter release only the curtain will move. This eliminates the camera shake that the mirror causes when it goes up.

if you have a 40D just enable live-view...it's the same result

but if you want to do the actually mirror lock up...i'm not sure...it's in the manual somewhere, i'll look

Both pix shot with f/11 and one at 0.5 sec while the other at 0.6 sec. What test are you trying to do?
If you are trying to find out AF calibration, use the largest aperture with good lighting.
Also, for the light condition of your kitchen, try to turn off the light from the hood and put some light from the side of your subject.
If you are trying to test other aspect of the lens, please give us more clues.

Thanks for the comments, I am trying to test the AF calibration and tried following instructions contained in article in EOS magazine, I did use F11 and should have had wide open, have not had a chance to re-do. thanks again, I will be back :)

Do a real test outdoors in good light with reasonable shutter speeds and larger targets.

1. If you are trying to test AF, do not use a small f/stop as its inherent DOF will mask focus errors.

2. You can evaluate accuracy of focus this way...
...a series of flat surfaces offset back, as focus plane to focus upon

IMAGE: http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i63/wiltonw/Focustest-2.jpg

and a ruler to assess accuracy of focus
IMAGE: http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i63/wiltonw/Focustestfullframe-1.jpg

You will then be able to evaluate shots close up like this...

What is this last picture? a series of videos boxes of Jacque, each pulled out or offset from each other? the tape measure appears to be at an angle to the railing......or have you done the same thing that you did in the first picture?

These were shot on different occasions...you would arrange the VCR boxes (or paperbacks or infant's A-B-C blocks or dominoes or anything with flat sides!) as shown in first photo, with ruler at an inclined plane touching the offset boxes, focus on the center box (which was aligned with the '9' in the example) and evaluate which part of the ruler is in best focus, to see if it matches the plane of focus of the target box -- which it does in the last example.
