Here's an portrait I did last year ....

I think you need to get control over your lighting. Honestly, one of the best "accessories" I have found for outdoor location shoots is an assistant or two ! Reflectors, diffusion panels, etc, and some folks to hold it all so you don't have to fight the wind.....it will make a huge difference. For less tha $100 you can get a big diffusion panel and a reflector. Light....it's all about light !

Here's an example of how I sort of salvaged a bad situation with a 42" diffusion panel used as a reflector on the near side. Obvious harsh back light....the girls getting ready to go out to prom night. They wanted a shot with the lake in the BG. As it turned out, they loved the photo.
