DSLR Speed Challenge #114:
"Night Life"

Not quite like the previous "Night shots"of last year, I'm looking for more of an urban feel:

Street, bright lights-big city, action along the boulevard, type images.
Have a go at it and have fun

TO CLARIFY: IT DOES NOT NECCESSARILY NEED TO BE URBAN. I JUST WANTED TO GET AWAY FROM IMAGES OF STARS AND THE MOON AND SUCH. POST AWAY...
=============== =========

Standard Rules apply:
Photo Submissions:

1. Camera - Any Canon DSLR Camera
2. Time - any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered.
3. Size - Please see the Image posting rules.
4. Post-Processing - do whatever you like and the host will decide if it works.
5. Posting -
* ONE PHOTO per photographer in each challenge.
* Photo Name in the message subject line.
* Camera model & lens used.
* Notes -- post brief EXIF data including ISO, shutter speed and aperture used.
6. Commenting - No commenting during challenge. When the posting is closed and a winner has been declared, comments can be made in this thread.
7. Have FUN!

One challenge every week, on the following schedule:
New Topic - After winner is declared.
Posting Starts - Right after topic is announced.
Posting Ends - 9PM CST, Saturday September 12th, 2009.
Winner from this competition decides the theme of the next one (and judges it for a winner) after this competition is closed

Thanks to the participants that posted. I enjoyed the images and these were tough choices.

I would like to take the time and critique all the images, as I've done in the past, but my time is short tonight due to family obligations.

Here are my top three:

3rd Place:ducklabdad, "Bike Night On Beale- You got the bright lights part. The streetlight across BB king's kinda takes away from the shot for me though. over all I did like it, especially all the neon.

2nd Place: Kendoway, "Dance Floor"- I really like this Chris. The colors on the floor, the shadow of the dancer and the motion blur on the legs. It's got a late sixties, psychedelic feel to it. Not technically perfect, but it tells it's story.

1st Place: Jason C, "sidewalk to nowhere..."-You have captured a grittier, seedier side of nightlife. I like your composition and the subject matter lends itself well to B&W. I imagine those to be James Dean's footsteps.

Congrats Jason! I turn it over to you for #115:D

Goodnight everybody;)

Thank you and goodnight, Ed.

Thank you Gail for your comment! Great submissions everyone.

Chris, your "Dance Floor" jumped out at me, not only for it's color and composition, but also becuase it juxtaposed my image. I saw your capture as 'excess', with mine being the antithesis of that very 'excess'...

Sorry, too much brain activity.

Once again, thank you. I'll post up #115 sometime tomorrow; it's going to be of the educational variety.

Regards

Jason C

Congrats to Jason, and Kendoway, good job to all.

Thanks Ed for running this one and the critique.

Recovering from surgery has kept my trips out to a minimum, but your "Night Life" challenge got me to thinking, and I knew what shot I wanted to take, and the one thing that the MD stressed is long walks, and what better place to recover than taking a long walk in "Memphis on Beale".

It is really good to have the critique of others as I really did not notice how much that street light did take away from the shot untill you pointed it out.

Thanks to all!!
