Did a dive last week at Ponquouge Bridge in Hampton Bays, NY. These are Forbes Sea Stars (Asterias forbesii) feeding on a bed of blue mussels (Mvtilus edulis). To eat them, sea stars pull on the shell of the mussel until the mussel becomes tired and open up just a little bit. Once open, the sea stars pushes its stomach out of its body, into the shell of the mussel. The stomach juices digest the mussel, and when done, the stomach is pulled back in, and they move onto the next mussel.

Try that with your next meal!

Too bad we cannot get Sea stars to adapt to a freshwater environment, then we'd turn 'em loose to feed on Zebra mussels in our freshwater lakes and streams.

Nice shot, BTW and I always like hearing the story behind it all, too, so thanks for that as well.

Thank you. Yeah that would solve a lot of problems, and at the rate they eat, it would solve them very quickly!

Where is that thread? I did not know of an underwater forum?

Thank you.

We are trying to get one established! We need to show "interest" before the mods will create one.

Wow that is an awesome shot and I learned something new too. Thanks for the cool tidbit of info. I always wondered how and what sea stars would eat.

Well, I just got back from a week in Bermuda. I did some diving. I will post some pics to that thread once I down load them.
