Hello,

I'm curious what lenses you all use for your long exposures and perhaps why you use it the most..

I'd like to start experimenting with night shots since I will have access to tripods with my intro to dig. photography class.

I only have the lenses in my sig - what do you suggest?

Thanks.

I use whatever lens gives me the focal length I need. Once you stick it on a tripod to do long exposures, things like aperture needed to gather light, minimum shutter speed for hand holding, IS/non-IS, etc, all become irrelevant. Just be sure to set your camera in mirror lockup mode and use the timer for best results.

Well what Mike says is all true so +1 for that.

As for my use of long shutters, its mostly to capture motion in my landscape shots- for me this is mostly for water movement. Something wide such as your 17-55 will be appropriate for landscapes, but a tele is also a handy landscape lens from time to time.

As the others have stated, I use whatever lens gives me the focal length that I need. I've taken night shots using every lens in my sig, anywhere from 17mm to 400mm. It just depends on what you're shooting.

I concur what others have said. Why should shooting at night be any different to shooting during daylight in determining what lens you use?

Use whichever lens gives you the focal length for your composition, and has the aperture range to allow you to select your lengthy exposures.

I tend to use my 16-35 II more than anything else, but that's usually because most of my work is night landscape stuff.

+1 on wide angle lenses. I use my 10-20 or 24-60 (24mm is wide enough in most cases)

If you use your 17-55 make sure to turn off the IS
