For some strange reason, we've never been to this before, despite living in the next village for 9 years!

Ho-hum, packed up the camera and went to have a crack at shooting the planes and tanks etc.

Sadly my longest usable lens only goes to 210mm, so I was enviously eying up some of the more well equipped togs with 100-400s and 300 primes, but you've got to go with what you've got!

Anyway, here's a selection of shots.

First up, the Hurricane. This actually came in to land and take off from a grass airstrip on site, which was unusual in itself.

Next to appear was one of two P51 Mustangs, "Marinell".

This was followed up by the appearance of the Vulcan which replicated a bombing run made by a Vulcan during the Falklands war. Note the red glow in the bomb bay reflecting the large pyrotechnic that went off on the ground.

and the aftermath...

then clearing the smoke on the return

There then followed a skirmish between Allied and German re-enactors which was pretty impressive. There's a tank and an armoured car in here, so I'll include it in transport!

After the battle came a fly past by the BBMF Lancaster.

Followed by the B17 Flying Fortress escorted by another Mustang "Ferocious Frankie"

before a a fly past feigning engine damage.

The Mustang was then joined by a Spitfire for a couple of runs

Before leaving the Spitfire to itself

Lessons learnt from my first crack at this? I'd gone to shutter priority mode on some sensible advice but didn't dial in enough exposure compensation, so most of my shots needed another stop or so in my Raw converter, so I'll watch for that next time. Alternatively, I maybe should have used spot metering to expose the planes correctly, but one to try next time.

Click for larger sizes, feedback very welcome.

"I'd gone to shutter priority mode" & set a fast speed for the props?
Airshow guys - prop freeze?

Alternatively, I maybe should have used spot metering

Manual for me, especially on a day like that:
Need an exposure crutch?

Why?

Thanks Frank. Yeah, manual probably would have been good. Really I should have checked the histogram at least once, but got caught up in the moment!

It would have lied to you & indicated a properly exposed sky. ;)
