I am no expert in video, but was thinking of experimenting at weddings. But how do you go about providing the video to the bride and groom, Blu-Ray? AVI file? The Blu-Ray option would be the best but is this possible? Any thoughts and help to a serious photographer but amateur video would be appreciated

All you need is a Blu-Ray recordable drive and enough $$$ to pay for the blanks.

I'm curious to know how peopie are publishing & distributing 5DII videos in HD format as well. Surely there's a way to do it without resorting to Blu-Ray burners...

Isn't it possible to simply burn a DVD with files designed for Blu-Ray? Obviously, it would have to be limited to 4.7 GB to fit a DVD disc... but it would at least be encoded with MPEG-4 codec.

No need to use Blu-Ray. Just use a regular DVD, movie editing app like iMovie and DVD building app like Apple's iDVD to build an user interface. First you edit the movie in iMovie and then 'build' a DVD with interactive screen with iDVD. Not sure about Windows apps.

Maybe a stupid question but would you still get a 1080 picture off of a standard DVD, if you kept the file below 4.7GB?

Maybe another stupid question, but what is the point of recording in 1080P HD and then washing out the quality by compressing it & putting it on a DVD?

Not really sure and would like to know also. But not many have Blu-Ray as of right now... so might want to stick with regular DVD until it becomes mainstream.

DVD's are just storage devices. The only diff between BR discs and reg DVD's is capacity.

1080p is high definition - wherever the video file is stored.

OK so if I gave a Bride and Groom a HD file from the 5DMKII on standard DVD it would not be recognized in a standard DVD player as it was a HD file but in Blu-Ray it would be fine, so probably best to add a cover to the DVD and mark it Blu-Ray?

Would I be also right to assume that if I had say Nero I could burn a HD file on to a standard DVD recorder and the file would be suitable for Blu-Ray playback?

Definitely not a video expert here, but I'm not sure a normal DVD player can cope with the bandwidth required for 1080p ... Sure a DVD can hold the data for a 1080p movie, but a DVD player won't be able to read from it fast enough ...

Also I doubt a DVD will work in a Blu-Ray player ... at least not without an additional bit of kit (external link) ...

You could just burn the HD file onto a DVD and tell them they need to play it on their computer .... if their computer is powerful enough to decode the video in realtime ... many aren't .... including mine! :(

My 2p ...

True, but the players are totally different. You'd still have to play it on a BD player for 1080p, unless there's some magic I am not aware of. Hmmmm... Can an upconverting SDEF player resolve the 1080p file and actually display it as true HDEF?

Saving it as a file on a DVD, they can click on the file and view the movie on their PC.

If the intention is to let them play the HD movie on their TV or projector, you should master a real BD disk. I think only a few BD players will support playing a HD movie from DVD media. Remember that the DVD is intended for a lower data rate, so a DVD with the data rate of a HD film will have to spin very fast. My bet is that only very, very few standalone BD players supports the required rotation speed.

The BD burners are very inexpensive compared to the 5Dmk2 :)

That's what I was thinking.

Actually most do as long as you format it to the right format. The Blu Ray forum has identified the fact that it should be real easy to watch home videos so it's no longer needed to have user created menu's. It's called AVCHD so look it up to see if it's compatible with your blu ray player

From Wiki:
"Being primarily an acquisition format, AVCHD can also be used for distribution of high definition video using inexpensive media like conventional DVD discs and flash memory cards. Many Blu-Ray Disc players support AVCHD playback from DVD discs. Many Panasonic and JVC HD television sets and Blu-Ray Disc players support AVCHD playback from SDHC memory cards."

Also I know it's not super cheap but blu ray disc's are now under 2 bucks which is what dual layer discs were at less then 2 years ago

Yes, all well said, but at the end of the day, you cannot watch HDEF from a non-BD player. The key is that the player device has to be able to output HDEF to watch HDEF.

I am playing "Master of the Obvious" here because there is much confusion over that fact.
