Hi all, I've had my G2 for 3 years and just last year after my warranty expired offcourse the camera stopped charging the batteries. I have 2 baterries and the camera just will not charge them, I called Canon seems it will cost over $100.00 just for them to look at it. Does anyone had this problem and fixed it by other means I dont want to spend too much money. Thanks
Joe

Hi Joe, Welcome to the forum. :D
About your battery problem, First, how old are the batteries?
Does the camera function OK other than not charging the battery?
I've heard of this problem here before, but dont remember the outcome.
If everything else on the camera works OK, you might want to consider picking up an inexpensive battery charger for the BP 511's. I would think you might want a separate charging system anyway. Sorry I cant be more help, but maybe somebody else who has experienced this will chime in here.

Thanks for the reply, everything seems to work ok on the camera just the charging seems to have gone bad. Can you suggest where I can get a standalone battery charger? I got both batteries when I got the camera they are fairly new. What charger do I need? Thanks guys.
Joe.

Joe,

I use the charger & batteries from here :

never had a problem with either charger or batteries. Also charged the original Canon battery until it gave up the ghost.

That means the batteries are at least 3 yrs old? Hardly what I'd call almost new. I had the same issues with a much newer aftermarket battery not holding a charge in my G2. Turns out it wasn't the battery but the camera. I removed the battery, put it back in and recharged until the orange light stopped blinking. I then proceeded to discharge the battery fully before recharging it. Well it took me a week to get the battery to drain whereas before the low battery indicator would flash after 10 or 20 pics. I'm happy I found this forum, it saved me the error of replacing a perfectly good battery. Now with a 3 yr old battery I'd be much more inclined to assume its a defective battery.

Mike

Thank you guys I just ordered a charger. I said the batteries were fairly new because I used it for about 8 months before my problems started. Anyway I post an update. Charger cost me 28.00 with shipping which is a lot better than over 100.00 to send it to canon. I just hope it works.

How did you discharge the battery? Did you use the camera to do it or did you use something else? Why did it take a week?:
