What to do with $1000?

I've been going back and forth over whether to buy a tamron 17-50 or the canon 17-55. Another thought occurred to me though. I currently have an xsi but if I go with the tamron 17-50 I could use the left over money to get a used or refurb'd 40d body.

So what would you guys go with....a 17-55 to go with my xsi or a tamron 17-50 and a 40d. Would the 40d be a significant upgrade to my xsi?

My vote goes for the 40D and the Tamron.

i would sell the xsi, 18-55, and 10-22, buy a used 5d, then buy whatever wide-angle you can afford. The Sigma 24-60 would be a good choice to start out with. But that's just me.

What major advantages would I have with the 40d over the XSI?

body size and controls beat the XXXD cameras. I beleive frame rate is higher too. I sure there are other things that I am not writing.

Yep, I had an XTi before the 40D and for me, the controls, ergonomics and top LCD alone are worth it over a Rebel. Also, you're getting a better AF system over the XSi, 9 cross-type AF points. And despite the 40D's older age, it's lower pixel density delivers better noise control IMO. It's also much more balanced with larger zoom lenses like your 70-200.
