heres a shot of an old barn (tone mapped)
i personally think it would look better without the powerline there but it was there and im trying to keep it as it looks. maybe i'll edit a copy without the lines as well for fun.
ive got a little history on this place too for those interested.
this is an abandoned barn in Oakville Ontario, there is a large farm house, a 3 car garage, a 2 car garage, and alot of property including tennis courts. this place has been abandoned for many years now and looks like the house has been vandalized quite a bit. i didnt go in but am attempting to locate the owners so i can go into the barn with permission. the reason for this is that back in the early 90s my uncle lived here. i was young, and played in the barn alot. we found an old car under the hay, and when he moved out we left an old Saab there in the barn with the other car. i want to see if its still there.

anyways let me know what you think.

Means a HDR rendered image.

Haymaker,

I like it.. but I think you should go back here on a really cloudy day. This way you'll get a really dramatic look, especially if it's HDR again.

Where about is this in Oakville? I'd love to check it out. Maybe you could submit it to www.uer.ca (external link)

Well that version of HDR looks like a normal print minus the burn marks on the tree top.

I like the color in and of itself, but I wonder if HDR is the right choice for this location? I expect abandoned buildings to look more dark and mysterious rather than bright and cheery. That could only be conformist thinking, though.

I do see a halo around the tree and another small building.

The halos are too distracting for me.

Jay-d, i have this site posted on UER already, just in the ontario forum though. im actually going back this weekend if you want to come along. shoot me a message on the other forum. i didnt put it in the database as im not a full member yet.

i persoanally feel its a compliment that it looks like a normal print because to me its no drastic and over the top.

yes the halos get me too, but ive seen and done ALOT worse. its a work in progress i guess.

i also think it would look great darker and desaturated a bunch so it would look creepier, but really the barn doesnt look to be really run down so i went this route.

heres the regular "0+/-" version

this house is on the property too and on a cloudy night its getting a visit for a creepy shot

Some thoughts:

The barn is lacking positive architectural or historically significant qualities (it's an old barn, but it's not a good old barn), and the landscape isn't interesting either. I love photos of delapidated barns, but I recommend seeking out more worthy subjects and photographing them at a better time of day (early morning or evening).

Another challenge this subject poses is that it lacks compositional promise. While I was about to make some comment about your composition, I found it difficult to suggest methods of improvement (except perhaps that your POV is roughly 45 degrees to the building, which is not nearly as interesting as a view that more strongly favors one side or another.), so the site itself may just not be conducive to a strong composition.

I thought it was just me, but I also do not see an OLd Abandoned Barn.I see something that looks lived in ..albeit its not.Nothing spooky here for me...

I'm afraid I have to agree with David, Flo and Jetcode. Though you've done a good job exposure-wise this image speaks of "recent metal building" rather than "old abandoned barn". I believe that "old barn" fans are going to be disappointed when they open this thread. The house (sans outbuilding) has somewhat more potential if shot creatively (and monotone is a good choice here), but I'm not sure it's a strong enough subject either. I would imagine that your best bet for interesting shots would be inside the structures.

Regards,
Mark

The moire in the first image will eventually drive you nuts. The color is nice and the detail and print tone are excellent.
